Chase Pistone Looks to Accomplish Another Goal at Lakeland
Could His First Pro Cup Victory Come at the Same Place as His First Pole?
CONCORD, NC (Jun 1, 2005) -- If Chase Pistone had a To-Do List before the start of the 2005 USAR Pro Cup season, he's been pretty busy checking things off as the season has progressed. Pole Position? Check. Top 10 Finish? Check. Top-five finish? Check. Win? Not quite yet.
But that could change after this weekend's race at USA International Speedway in Lakeland, Florida. The rookie driver kicked off his season, and his career, there earlier this year by winning the pole at the track. Could a victory be next?
"We're going down there with a good run in mind. We set a top five as our goal. We definitely think that we can win though. I think that this team is ready to win. We've run in the top five at every race except Greenville and had things go wrong. We've been up front every race and people know that we are there. They know that we have the equipment and the motor. We have the help to do it and we just need everything to go our way. If that happens in Lakeland, we can win."
In fact, that could have happened in Pistone's Pro Cup debuted had things gone a little bit differently.
"We had a top-three run going there before and just had a flat tire with about 13 or 14 laps to go, so we didn't have anything to show for it at the end."
Now that they have run well at Lakeland, it won't be easy to surprise anyone with a good run.
"Everyone is expecting us to go down there and run good. We set the bar high when we won the pole there and I don't know if that's a good or a bad thing."
Having several weeks off since the last Pro Cup race has also helped to team get ready for Lakeland.
"I don't think that I've ever been more prepared for a race. We've had so much time off that everything is right and fresh. I'm confident with the car and I'm confident on going back and repeating racetracks."
Pistone is cautious not to rely too much on his past performance at Lakeland to predict this week's race outcome.
"We know what we had for a car and how we ran before," said Pistone. "Who knows? We could go down there to a totally different racetrack. It's going to be much hotter. We may not even be able to use what we had. But I'm not worried about it; we'll go down there and find a set-up and hopefully go from there. We are expecting to run in the top five and anything better than that, we'll be very happy with that."
