Charlie Bradberry Set to Make Pro Cup Debut for Knight's Racing
Super Late Model Veteran Teaming Up With Top-Notch Pro Cup Team Beginning at Kenly
CHELSEA, AL (June 28, 2006) -- Charlie Bradberry is always looking for the next big opportunity. And now, one of the biggest opportunities of his career looks to be just around the corner. Bradberry will make his USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series debut on July 22nd at Southern National Raceway Park when the 23-year-old teams up with Knight's Racing.
"This is a really great opportunity that came to me from owners Pete and Bud Knight," said Bradberry. "Right now, the Pro Cup Series is the most competitive form of short track racing out there and the Southern Division is stacked with talented drivers, from Shane Huffman to Cay Rogers to Bobby Gill. I've raced against a lot of these guys, and there are a lot of other guys in the series I can't wait to race against too. They say to make yourself better; you've got to beat the best, so now I'll get to drive against a lot of them.
"I'm very interested to get behind the wheel of a Pro Cup car, and there isn't a better car I could get into than Pete Knight's car. The equipment he has is first rate and is as good as anyone else's out there. This is going to be a little bit different of an opportunity for me and a new challenge. Starting out at Southern National will be big for me too. I've already raced there once this year (with PASS South); it's a track I've got laps on."
Even though Bradberry has showed his versatility behind the wheel during the last few years, this will be the Chelsea, Alabama's first foray into the Pro Cup Series. Bradberry has been a dominant force over the last couple of years in Super Late Models across the Southeast, especially this year. Already in '06, Bradberry, a former NASCAR Southeast Series Champion and Snowball Derby winner, has earned five wins in a number of different series, including PASS South, the Blizzard Series and the All American Super Late Model Series.
"It's been a great year for us so far. We've been fortunate to win a lot of races and we always seem to have a car that is right up front and running in the top-five almost every week. There are a few other races that we should have won had certain circumstances not happened. We probably should have about eight wins at least already."
Bradberry has also made several starts over the last few years in both the NASCAR Craftsman Truck and the Busch Series, which will give him the "big car" feel that will help Bradberry adapt from the lighter Super Late Models to the heavier Pro Cup cars.
"The Pro Cup Series seems to be drawing in a lot of people from the straight-rail and perimeter Late Model world. Jeff Fultz is running really well in the series now and people like Gary Helton, Ricky Turner, Dusty Williams and several other guys that I've raced with a lot over the last couple of years are looking to break into the series. That shows right there that the Pro Cup world is the place to go right now if you want to compete in the best short track series out there."
Knight's Racing made its Hooters Pro Cup Series debut in 2005 with veteran Shane Huffman as the driver. The team proceeded to win a series-high nine races during the 2005 season, including the debut race for the team in February of 2005. In 2006, Knight's Racing employed two new drivers in Andrew and Brad Rogers to run in both the Northern and Southern Divisions. The team has garnered five top-10 finishes thus far in 2006, with a best second place effort coming just last week by Brad Rogers.
Bradberry will take over the wheel of the #81 in the Southern Division, which was recently vacated by Andrew Rogers.
"I'm just really looking forward to this opportunity. This will be a good way for me to go out and learn the way the Pro Cup Series is run and get some valuable experience. I think we will be pretty good, too. With a team as good as Knight's Racing, there is no reason we shouldn't go right out there and be a top-five car and a threat to win. That is just how good that team is."
The 250-lap race at Southern National Raceway Park on Saturday night, July 22nd, is set to start at 7:30pm.
