STUART, VA (August 17, 2000) -- Hooters ProCup Rookie of the Year candidate Jon Wood and his Goracing.com Taurus are set for battle at South Boston Speedway this weekend. The short, multi-groove racetrack has produced many racecar drivers who spend their Saturday and Sunday afternoons in the NASCAR Busch and Winston Cup Series. Wood's dreams are to compete at the top of the NASCAR ranks eventually, but the goal he's focused on for this weekend is simple.
According to Wood, "We're hungry for a win and we believe we have a shot at it this weekend. The track has three distinct grooves which is different than most racetracks. We've consistently run inside the top-10 in the races this year and at the beginning of the year that was my goal. I wanted to be competitive. Now I know we're capable of running in the front so our main goal for the rest of the year is to win. We've been close a couple of times but close doesn't count in this sport."
Wood's teammate, Winston Cup driver Elliott Sadler, has numerous hours of track experience at South Boston Speedway. In 1995, Sadler was crowned track champion at South Boston after winning 13 races during the season. Sadler gave Wood a few words of wisdom leading up to the race.
"Elliott told me I had better go test if I expect a good finish," stated Wood. "We tested last week and we were happy with how the car ran. Elliott gave me a few pointers and I'm hoping they pay off for me on Saturday night."
Race time is slated for Saturday, August 19, 2000 at 7:30 p.m. EDT. The 250-lap event will be televised nationally by Speedvision on August 25, 2000 at 8:00 p.m.
