Ward brakes winless skid with Hooters ProCup victory First USAR win since 1997

Jefferson, GA - Throw that monkey to the ground and stomp that sucker flat. The losing skid is over for popular Marietta, SC driver Marty Ward. On lap 210, while racing Bobby Gill for the lead, Ward threw his florescent orange painted Hooters-sponsored Chevrolet Monte Carlo sideways through the fourth turn off Peach State Speedway's treacherous half-mile speedplant leading the final 40 laps to win the United Speed Alliance Racing Naturally Fresh Mountain Spring Water 250. Ward's win broke the 34-year-old's 30-race winless streak dating back to June 14, 1997. Ironically Ward's last Hooters ProCup win also came at Peach State Speedway. "The slicker the track, the better I like it," said Ward. "I'm a smooth driver and when the sun goes down this track really loosens up. We chased stagger all day but those four tires came in and we were gone. I only got worried when we began falling back before the tire change. But I saw Fogleman falling back about the same time so I knew after the tire change we'd still be in it." Ward joined most of the front runners when he pitted under caution on lap 145 running sixth, leaving pit road ninth with his new set of Goodyear Eagles, Ward began to wear down the leaders and by lap 200 was challenging Gill for the lead. Eight drivers shared the lead of the race including runner up Jay Fogleman who won the Lucas Oil Products Halfway Challenge. "I had nothing for him," said Fogleman, Durham, NC, who regained the $200,000 Series Point's Lead in his KIDDE Safety sponsored Ford. Fogleman, who led 78 laps, nudged Chad Chaffin's Logan Roadhouse Taurus out of the groove in the third turn, two laps from the finish. Chaffin, Smyrna, TN, in just his second start of the year, lead two laps and finished third. Mike Laughlin, Jr., Simpsonville, SC, finished fourth in his Valenite sponsored Taurus while early race leader "Super" Mario Gosselin, Lake Wales, FL, finished fifth in his W.J.Plemons Investments Monte Carlo. Gill, Dalton, GA, drove his AquaTech International Monte Carlo to a sixth place finish. Entering the fifth race of the season he held a five point advantage but now trails Fogleman by 15 points. Attrition struck many of the early favorites of the race when accidents claimed Michael Ritch, High Point, NC, and his Jackaroo Sauces Chevrolet and Shane Kennedy, Thomasville, NC, in the Irmo Grading Chevrolet on the first lap. Justin Labonte's Trinity, NC-based, Penrose Hot Sausages Chevrolet wrecked on the 59th circuit. Discount Auto Parts Pole Award winner Toby Porter, Greenville, SC, lead the first 14 laps before rear end trouble sidelined his First Class/Pepsi sponsored Chevrolet. Defending Hooters ProCup champion Jeff Agnew, Copper Hill, VA, parked his Twin City Motor Exchange Chevrolet on lap 25. Naturally Fresh Mountain Spring Water driver Andy Thurman, Concord, NC, was out by lap 36 while Jimmy Foster, Mooresville, NC, sixth at Myrtle Beach in his Hooters ProCup debut was through for the night on lap 39. Mardy Lindley of Taylors, SC drove his Aloe-Lu-Ya/ Meineke Grand Prix to a seventh place finish to win the Miller Lite Rookie of the Race award. Derrick Kelley, Auburndale, FL, starting 34th and Charlie Ford, Charles City, VA, starting 36th, each moved up 24 positions to split the W.J. Plemons Investment Hard Charger Award. Forty three drivers took time trials with half a second separating the 36-car starting field. There were nine caution periods for 64 laps. The race will air on The Speedvision Network Sunday, May 9th at 8 pm. The sixth race of the $1.5 million 20-race series will be Friday, May 14th at Tri-County Motor Speedway in Hudson, NC.
