McFarland Has Sights Set On USAR Hooters Pro Cup Win At Iowa
After a near win in the NASCAR Busch East Series race at New Hampshire International Speedway last weekend, Mark McFarland and his Pete Knight Racing team are stoked to get to Iowa Speedway and the second round of the 2008 USAR Hooters Pro Cup Championship Series this Saturday.
"I can't wait to get there," said McFarland, driver of the No. 81 Knight's Companies/Greased Lightning Chevrolet Monte Carlo. "I've never raced at Iowa, but we did do a tire test there and it's an awesome track. That test went very well for us and the way we have been running, we think we're racing well enough to win. We just have to seal the deal."
McFarland sealed the deal in the first race of the Pro Cup Championship battle two weeks ago at Mansfield (OH) Motorsports Speedway qualifying third and finishing sixth. The solid run jumped the Winchester, VA native to sixth in the USAR title chase with four races to go -- including this weekend'sSoy Biodiesel 225at Iowa Speedway.
"We had a good run at Mansfield and had a car good enough to win," said McFarland. "There were some guys who pitted early in the race. The top three finishers came and got their tires on Lap 8. There was no way they were going to make it on fuel, but with all the cautions we had, that allowed them to make it. We ran over 100 laps under caution and they were able to go the distance. They got track position on us and we were never able to make it back up."
While a sixth-place effort would be satisfying to most teams, McFarland was quick to point out that his Pete Knight bunch would be looking for more at Iowa.
"We're going to Iowa to win the race," McFarland stated.bI think we have the car that can do it. We should be really good."
A win or another top finish at Iowa would go a long way in helping the team to its ultimate goal this season -- a USAR Hooters Pro Cup championship -- according to McFarland.
"We're still in good shape in the championship point's race," said McFarland, just 89 markers out of first in the title chase. "All of our cars are back in order. Equipment-wise, we're ready. The crew is pumped up. We're looking forward to getting to the track and getting going."
McFarland and his Pete Knight Racing team will take the green flag in the Soy Biodiesel 225 at Iowa Speedway on Saturday, September 22. The race will roll off at 7 p.m. Central Time.
