Jefferson, GA - RIS - It may have taken 21 hours to complete the race, but for 1996 Jackaroo ProCup Champion Marty Ward it felt a lot longer. The Marietta, SC driver finally got the monkey off his back this year by scoring his first win in the Hooters Chevrolet at Peach State Speedway in Jefferson, GA.
Rain plagued the event from the onset, and qualifying had to be cancelled due to wet weather, forcing the cars to line up in order of points scored in the first four events. This placed Mario Gosselin on the pole with Charlie Ford outside the front row.
Gosselin led the 37 car field to the green flag and took the lead as they headed into turn one on the high banked, 1/2 mile asphalt oval. Gosselin, who has taken the Jackaroo Monte Carlo to Victory Lane in the last three races, led until lap 43 when Chad Chaffin in the N&S Car Parts/Red Line Oil Ford passed him and assumed the point. The Smyrna, TN driver seemed to be able to drive anywhere on the track and he began to open a gap between himself and Gosselin.
As the race approached the 105th lap a Severe Thunderstorm struck the track with high winds, heavy rain and extensive lightning and the race was first slowed by the yellow and then at lap 114 it was red flagged. All efforts to get the track dry following the storm were thwarted when more rain began to fall and USAR Officials were forced to impound the cars and schedule the restart for the next day.
The Restart still had Chaffin leading, but the track had been washed clean by the previous night's rain and it was a different surface that the driver's faced. Ward, who had climbed to second prior to the red flag, now made short work of running Chaffin down and on lap 155 he took the lead. From that point on he was unchallenged for the point and cruised to an easy victory.
"Man I was getting worried," Ward said after the race. "With just a little luck I knew we could win this one. I'm proud of my crew. They hung in there with me. This victory sure feels good!"
Seven cars finished the 250 lap grind on the lead lap, with Gosselin extending his points lead with a second place finish. Chaffin was able to overcome his handling problems through two pit stops and come back to finish third and he also garnered the Miller Beer Halfway Challenge award. Purina Puppy Chow Rookie of the Year contender Lee Tissot of Arden, NC brought his Taylor Construction Chevrolet home in fourth to win $1,000 as the highest placed rookie, and Gary Laton of Albemarle, NC was fifth in the Tampico Citrus Punch Chevrolet. Jabe Jones, of Martin, GA drove the Southern Basement Ford from 37th starting position to 8th in the final standings to win the $500 Hard Charger Award. JOhn Kaiser, Racing Information Systems
