Sammons gets season headed in right direction

HOLLAND, NY - Danny Sammons got his season headed in the right direction with a top five finish in Saturday night's Naturally Fresh 250 presented by Sunoco, USAR Hooters ProCup Series event held at Holland Speedway.

Sammons, 19, of Bordentown, N.J., has had a rough start to his 2003 season failing to finish the first three events on the USAR Northern Series schedule despite having one of the fastest cars in each race.

While Saturday's event did not go as smoothly as he would have liked, the youngster was happy to be around at the finish. "We've been fast all year and now finally have something to show for it, Sammons said after surviving a tough night on the three-eighths-mile, high-banked paved short track.

"For many reasons we have not finished a race yet this season. While our team badly wants to win our first USAR event, we all realize that we first must finish a race. And then we can begin concentrating on winning a race."

"Getting a top-five finish should be a big boost for us as we prepare for the next event in two weeks in Winchester, Indiana."

Sammons ran as high as third at Holland before settling for fifth at the checkered flag.

"I got up to third late in the race and tried to track down the front two, said Sammons. In trying to track down the leaders I burned up my tires and slid back to fifth in the closing stages of the race."

The race will be televised on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Friday at noon on SPEED Channel.
