Historic Hickory Motor Speedway hosts USAR
MYRTLE BEACH, SC -- Hickory Motor Speedway will host the first of two USAR Hooters ProCup Series races this season on Saturday, July 26. The Galaxy Foods 250 presented by Pepsi will be the 10th race of the regular season for the Southern Division. The track will also host the final regular season race of the season for the Series before the five-race Championship Series begins.
Bobby Gill has won three-times at the historic track including last year when he outlasted a hard-charging Jason Sarvis during his record-setting year. Current points leader in the Southern Division Shane Huffman finally got some hometown luck to collect a top-five finish at his home track.
"We always look forward to running at home," said Huffman. "I have won a lot of races on that track and it feels good to run in front of so many of my family and friends. It would feel great to get a win there as well."
The Galaxy Foods 250 presented by Pepsi will also be a homecoming for several more drivers and teams that call the Hickory, NC area home. Mike Williams and Ronnie Davidson have both raced at Hickory with the pair from nearby Conover and Lenoir, respectively. Jimmy McClain has also collected a lot of laps and wins at the tight .363-mile bullring.
Mart Nesbitt competed at the track as a late model competitor in the mid-1990's and enjoys running near his hometown in western North Carolina.
"I like the track and it reminds me a lot of Asheville Speedway where I won two track championships," said Nesbitt. "It is the closest race to our hometown and it will be nice to run close enough so many family and friends can come down and watch the race in person."
Historically the races at Hickory are competitive with a good crowd expected for the race. The Galaxy Foods 250 presented by Pepsi will be the seventh USAR Hooters ProCup Series race held at the track with Derrick Kelley, Lee Tissot and Mario Gosselin also collecting wins at the track in addition to the three wins by Gill.
