LAKELAND, FL - RIS - Jimmy Cope captured his third straight win in the United Speed Alliance Racing Hooters Cup Discount Auto Parts 200 at the USA International Speedway Sunday afternoon. Cope's win ties him with Dick Anderson, the only other driver to win three Hooters Cup Series races in a row. Cope started on the outside of the front row and led the most laps to win the Discount Auto Parts 200 while battling a problem with the power steering in his Miller Lite Chevrolet. Bobby Gill in the Terminal Trucking Chevrolet took the second place finishing position with Dick Anderson in the Castrol GTX Chevrolet in third. Rounding out the top five were Mike Garvey in the Coors Light Monte Carlo and rookie contender Scott Wimmer in the McDonalds Chevy. Wimmer also nabbed the hard charger award as he came to the front from the 32nd starting position.

Pole sitter Freddie Query, who had set fast time in qualifying of 20.648 seconds around the 3/4 mile high-banked track for an average speed of 130.763 mph, led the field down to the green and took command of the early stages of the race. Cope and Gill gave chase, but it was not until Query opted for an early pit stop on lap 53 that either was able to take the point. The two drivers swapped the front spot until lap 97 when they both headed in for their pit stops under caution.

Dwayne Dempsey stayed on the track to pick up the lead of the race and to collect the halfway bonus of $1000 before he too headed to his crew for service.

For Query, who is running on a race-to-race basis while looking for a sponsor, his hopes of picking up his third victory of the season ended when Garvey challenged him for position and the two cars got together. Garvey's car got loose and slid up into that of Query and sent Query into the turn one wall. Garvey was able to continue with only minor damage, but Query lost two laps in the pits as he made repairs. Although he was able to eventually make up one of the lost laps, the chance for the win was gone.

Dick Anderson was able to close the gap on Gill and Cope and make it a three-way battle for the lead, but Cope had his car hooked up and as the race wound down he was able to pull away and take the checkered flag.

Defending Hooters Cup Champion Billy Bigley Jr and 1995 Champion Mario Gosselin were involved in an early-race incident that also involved Jack Cook. Cook's car suffered terminal damage, while both Bigley and Gosselin were able to continue after making repairs.

Only seven cars finished the 200 lap grind on the lead lap. 1996 Rookie of the Year Derrick Kelley took the sixth spot in his Discount Auto Parts Chevy and Ronnie Sanders took home seventh.

The next event for the Hooters Cup Series will Be May 24th at Fairgrounds Speedway in Birmingham, AL.
