Goodson Garners Fifth-Place Honors at Jennerstown @USAR ProCup Series Southern Division Points Leader Gains Track Experience
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., (July 16, 2001) -- Hal Goodson and his Taylor Motorsports team headed north this past weekend to compete in USAR ProCup Series Northern Division action at Jennerstown Speedway in Jennerstown, Pa. Goodson brought the No. 45 Carlin Financial Chevrolet Monte Carlo home with fifth-place honors as the team was using the race as a test in preparation for the USAR "Four Champions Challenge" event at the speedway in September.
"We had a decent car tonight," Goodson said. "We were a little off on the setup and the car was tight most of the night, but we were able to complete all the laps and get a top-five finish. We came up here to figure out what we needed to bring back for the championship race in the fall. While our goal was to win the race, I think we gained some knowledge on chassis setup and we'll be ready for them when we return later in the year."
Goodson started the event from the 10th position and settled into a comfortable pace for the first part of the event. During an early caution, Goodson came to the attention of his pit crew to make a chassis adjustment to help fight a tight condition.
The Darlington, S.C. native used patience to maneuver back through the field and managed to avoid several incidents on the track. By the middle stages of the event, Goodson was running near the top five and began to flex his muscle.
As the leaders pitted during a caution, quick work by his pit crew allowed Goodson to move into fourth position. With the laps clicking off, Goodson was running in fifth place and had the leaders in sight. When the checkered flag waved, the No. 45 machine crossed the finish line in fifth.
"We were off somewhere tonight," Crew Chief Colan Ingle said. "Hal did a great job out there scoring a top-five finish and the guys on this pit crew had an excellent pit stop. When we come back up here in September, we'll be ready for them."
Goodson and the Taylor Motorsports team turn their attention to USAR ProCup Series Southern Division action this weekend at New River Valley Speedway in Radford, Va. Heading into the event, Goodson holds a nine-point lead over Bobby Gill in the championship battle.
USAR ProCup Series qualifying at New River Valley Speedway is set for this Saturday at 5:00 p.m. EST. The Kroger 250 gets the green flag two hours later at 7:00 p.m. EST.
