Rookies Continue To Impress as Pro Cup Season Goes On
CONCORD, NC (April 30, 2007) -- Rookies in racing series typically have different goals than the veterans. One of those goals is usually to finish the race with the car in one piece. For the Turner Motorsports Rookies, at the most recent USAR Hooters Pro Cup event at Concord Motorsport Park (NC), mission was accomplished. Rookies James Buescher and Gary Helton were able to come home in the 11th and 22nd spots respectively.
"The weekend started out pretty good for us," said Buescher. "We ran a lot of laps, and we were in the top-10 in the practice results. We had a good car, but when qualifying came around, the car was just really loose and I ended up qualifying it16th."
Once the race was underway Buescher quickly found a way to move to the front by playing a game of pit strategy.
"We had a different pit strategy than most of the people in the race. We stayed out when everybody went in to get tires, and we had good track position. After we took tires we were able to get back up to 12th and just ended up getting run into coming out of four. We chased it down to one and two and went around there.
"That was pretty late in the race when that happened, and we ended up a lap down. We were lucky to be able to get back going and get back on the lead lap and finish where we did in the 11th spot."
In preparation for the event, Buescher and his teammate had tested for the event since it was the first time that the two would be on the track in the Pro Cup cars, and that session paid in dividends once the race was underway.
"The testing session that we had a few weeks ago paid off a lot. We took a lot of what we learned, and what Gary Helton learned, and put it together on the two cars and it just helped both of them a lot with all of the track time that the two of us got. It really helped us to have that experience on the track."
Throughout the race, Helton and Buescher were solid competitors. Helton wasn't ever quite able to make it up to the front. He qualified in the 26th position and was able to work his way up and brought his car home in the 22nd spot, behind Buescher who came home in 11th.
"I don't know if we had a shot to win it," added Buescher, "but I think we would have been good at the end if we hadn't spun. We just got spun so late in the race, and we only had twenty laps to try and get back up there. I think that we probably would have had a top-five, but we will just have to try again at the next race."
The Turner Motorsports team will have their next chance at victory when the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series returns to action on Saturday, June 2nd, at Peachstate Speedway (GA). Racing will get underway at 7:30 pm, and all USAR Hooters Pro Cup Races can be seen on SPEED Channel.
