#54 BOB STEELE CHEVROLET ENTRY WAS STRONG, BUT ENDED RACE AGAINST THE WALL
CONCORD, NC (April 28, 2008) -- Travis Kittleson started out the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series season with a pair of top-10 finishes. Those also came in his first two starts of the season, so when Kittleson headed to Concord Motorsport Park (NC) this past weekend, he and his #54 Bob Steele Chevrolet team were ready to end up in the top five...or better.
It looked like they would be doing just that too, but a tire problem ended those hopes and left Kittleson back in the 27th position of the race rundown.
"I'm so disappointed," said Kittleson. "We started 15th and the car was good. It felt pretty racy, but I was cautiously aggressive. I wanted to save the car and run conservative, but at the same time we knew that the rain was coming [and the race probably wouldn't make it to the scheduled end]. I had one of the only cars that could pass on the outside and we were moving up. We got all the way up to the fifth spot."
But a fifth place finish wasn't to be.
"I could tell that the right rear tire was chunking," said Kittleson. "I could feel it giving out, but they knew that the rain was coming so I stayed out on the track. Finally, I felt it let go and I really tried to back it down, but it was too late. Going into turn three, the car spun out. It hit in the right rear and then spun around and wiped out the front. We were done."
Soon afterwards, it started to rain and the race was shortened as a result.
"I think that we were looking at a top-five finish, but it wasn't to be," said Kittleson. "This team is getting better and better though and I'm really looking forward to our next race."
