FAYETTEVILLE, GA (May 19, 2000) - United Speed Alliance Racing President Gene Cox released Friday afternoon the results of a closed hearing held Thursday evening by the USAR Appeal Board. The five-member committee heard testimony from USAR and driver Mike Laughlin, Jr. which concerned the penalty he was assessed as a result of post-race technical inspection at Myrtle Beach Speedway May 6th.

"The USAR rulebook allows a provision for a penalized USAR member to appeal a penalty to the appeal board," said Cox. "Mike (Laughlin, Jr.) filed an appeal with the board which decided to reduce the original penalty and issued a new penalty which will take effect immediately." The five-member board reached a decision to disqualify Laughlin, Jr. from the May 6th race with a loss of all monetary awards, all championship points gained and probation for the remainder of the 2000 season. In addition, crew chief for the #7 team John Kellett will be suspended from the remaining three "Four Champions Challenge" events to be held later this season.

As a result of the new penalty, Mardy Lindley, driver of the #01 Aloe Lu-Ya Ford Taurus, was declared the winner of the Mark Brooks Memorial/Hooters 250 allowing the possibility for Lindley to set his sights for the $100,000 bonus if he can win all four "Challenge Races."

"USAR is satisfied with the ruling of the appeal board and we are ready to move forward with the remaining races on our schedule," said Cox. "We want to provide our drivers with a fair and level field of competition and we feel this penalty will serve as a deterrent for further questionable actions by our teams and drivers that compete in the Hooters ProCup Series."
