VERNON, NY - The DIRT Sportsman division at New Utica-Rome Speedway takes headline status this Sunday August 27 as the UFPO "Dig Safely" Sportsman Super DIRT Series heads to the popular Vernon speedway for a 30-lap Syracuse Qualifier. Also scheduled in a regular program are the DIRT 358 Modifieds, DIRT Pro Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Slingshots. Race time is set for 6pm.

Racing in all divisions should be fast and furious, as only one points race will be left after the night is completed.

Oneida's Ron Holmes still leads the DIRT 358 Modified point standings, and Holmes will be looking to hold off the rest of the competitors so he can win his first career Utica-Rome Modified Track Championship. Ronnie Johnson, Andy Bachetti, and Jason Barney are first time feature winners this season in the 358 division. Other drivers looking for the huge 30-lap feature win include Tim Clemons, J.J. Michaels, Todd Burley, Gus Schmidt, Billy Wilcox, Dale Planck, John Barker Jr. and many more.

The cars and stars of the UFPO "Dig Safely" Sportsman Super DIRT Series will converge on Utica-Rome for a special 30-lap Syracuse Mile Super DIRT Week Qualifier. Round 5 of the 19 race series will be a shootout of the Sportsman divisions finest from the entire DIRT circuit. Young sophomore sensation Matt Sheppard, the current series point leader, will look to extend his lead in the standings. Other top-invading drivers will include Chad Brachman, Chris Schultz, Karl Comfort, Steve Gray, Jim Spano, Randy Chrysler, Rich Swartout, and many more. Can one of Utica-Rome's regulars, such as top runners Willy Decker, Jamie Christian, or Kevin Crave defeat one of the outsiders looking to steal the Sportsman Super DIRT Series glory?

West Edmeston's Bret Belden recently won his first DIRT Pro Stock win of the season at Utica-Rome, while Bridgewater's Tom Denton still leads the point standings. Drivers looking for their first wins of the season as the points wind down are Jason Rood, Wayne Archer, and Dave Moyer.

Fulton's Dave Mannise is dominating the Pure Stock division at Utica-Rome with five feature wins. Chad Ray now has two feature wins, and Jeff Pastorella has one. Jim Thomas, Mark Effner, and Waylan Wilczek are drivers still looking for their first wins of the season.

The New Utica-Rome Speedway is a Sunday family tradition in the Mohawk Valley, and you can be a part of it this summer. The gates on Sunday August 27 will open at 4pm and racing will begin at 6pm. The speedway is located just 20 minutes west of Utica on Route 5 in Vernon, and it is easily accessible from NYS Thruway Exit 33. Free parking and overnight camping is allowed on speedway grounds.
