St. Amant has point's lead entering Toledo.
Pendleton, IN (August 7, 2002) -- When the 2002 ASA Racing Series comes to Toledo Speedway this Saturday and Sunday, August 10-11 for the Metro Toledo -- Northwest Ohio Ford Dealers 300 presented by Jani-King and Sterling, it'll mark the fi rst time this season that someone other than Joey Clanton of Georgia has held the championship point's lead.
Gary St. Amant of Columbus (OH) secured a 28-point lead following the July 28 BFGoodrich Tires 300 at Madison (WI). St. Amant is a two-time ASA National Champion, although he remains winless through 13 of 20 events in 2002. He has posted nine top-five fini shes and three times has started from the pole.
"It seems like most of the year we have been behind," said St. Amant, driver of the number 7 ACDelco car. "We had some decent runs to start the year, but I think the fact that Joey (Clanton) was so dominant early in the season we really d idn't pay too much attention to the points and where just trying to get our car to where we could contend week-in and week-out."
Clanton broke an all-time ASA mark by winning the first five races of the season. The five straight wins tied the overall consecutive win streak set by Johnny Sauter in 2001. He has led for nearly 1,000 laps more than any other competitor and claims seven victories this season.
"We're looking to get back to where we were earlier in the year," said Clanton, driver of the number 83 Camp Fire USA car. "We've had a few bad races that has really made the points tight. At Pennsylvania, Salem and at Madison there have been some deals with a monkey on our back. The cars have been fast, its just getting it to the finish. We've tested at Toledo and with the new pavement I hope that will be an advantage for us. Our preparation has been good and our pit sto ps remain fast."
Rookie David Stremme of South Bend (IN) is third in the overall standings trailing St. Amant by 54 points. He holds a 173-point advantage over fellow rookie Dan Fredrickson in the contest for the Pat Schauer Memorial Rookie of the Year Award and an additio nal $50,000.
