FORT WORTH-DALLAS (June 4, 2001) - Not all of the racing action at Texas Motor Speedway during the Casino Magic 500 will be on the 1.5-mile superspeedway. Short-track racing will be represented Saturday afternoon, June 9, when Legends and Bandoleros are featured on the quarter-mile frontstretch oval.
Legends and Bandoleros are purpose-built racing vehicles designed for competition on speedways less than a half-mile in length. The Legends and Bandolero Cars will kick off the Casino Magic 500 program at 3:30 p.m. shortly after the spectator grandstand gates open. Admission to the Legends and Bandolero events is included with each Casino Magic 500 Indy Racing ticket.
Many of the teams will be using the weekend as a tuneup to the ten-week Thursday Night Stampede summer racing series. Legends events will be conducted in the Pro Division (experts), Masters (40 years of age and up) and Semi-Pro (novice) with Bandolero racing in Bandits (ages 9 - 11) and Young Guns (12 - 16).
Several drivers entered for this weekend's events are currently in the top ten in the INEX national point standings. In the Legends Pro division, Kelly Vinson from New Braunfels is the top Texas driver with Josh Gilbert, Grapevine; Scott Anderson, Austin and Gary Buchanan of San Antonio trailing. Les Bunte from Austin and Ronnie Hall of Alvord are currently in the Masters national top ten with Semi-Pro driver Gene Conley of Lewisville leading the Texas contingent.
Three Bandolero Bandits drivers occupy top ten point positions nationally, brothers Steven and Dean Abbey of Commanche and Mark Webb of Colleyville.
