ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Joey Clanton, 2000 American Speed Association (ASA) rookie of the year winner and 2001 ASA championship contender, wowed the crowd this past Saturday night with a dominating victory in the ASARacing.com 300 at St. Augustine Speedway. After starting on the grid second, Clanton never wavered in his drive to put the No. 83 Steve Dale Motorsports/Zaxby's Chevrolet Monte Carlo into victory lane.
After several cautions in the first 100 laps of the race, Joey Clanton and the Steve Dale Motorsports team waited patiently before moving the No. 83 into the lead. When the caution flag flew at lap 121, the No. 83 car came down pit road in the second position. After putting on fresh right side tires and fueling the car, Clanton left pit road in the first position and never looked back.
Despite numerous cautions during the second half of the race, the No. 83 Chevrolet Monte Carlo led the race from lap 121 until the end. While the rest of the teams were pitting their cars and wondering when the No. 83 car would join them on pit road, Clanton stayed on the track protecting his position and concentrating on reaching the checkered flag first. The one pit stop strategy paid off as Joey Clanton captured his second ASA Series win and his first win of the 2001 season.
"I am so excited for the Steve Dale Motorsports/Zaxby's team," exclaimed Clanton. "This Chevrolet Monte Carlo has been great all week for me. I just want to thank the crew for giving me the best car on the track and making my job a whole lot easier. We were patient in waiting for the right opportunity to take the lead. Once we did, we set our sights on winning. Gene (Roberts, crew chief) made a great call on only pitting once for right side tires and I know everyone is probably shaking their heads on how we were able to do it. We came and tested and learned some things about the BFGoodrich tires that definitely paid off tonight. This was a great way to start 2001."
Steve Dale, owner of the No. 83 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, had to make a long walk to victory lane from the spotter's stands before getting the chance to hug and congratulate his driver. When asked for his reaction, Dale exclaimed, "Awesome. The guys on this team have worked really hard all winter. This is the job that we set out to accomplish."
The leader of the Steve Dale Motorsports crew, Gene Roberts, was overwhelmed at the success of the team. "Awesome team. Awesome car. Awesome driver, " exclaimed a humble Roberts.
