JEFF STRUNK IS ON TOP FOR LUCRATIVE MOTOR TRUCK EQUIPMENT CO. KENWORTH/CUMMINS NASCAR MODIFIED CHAMPION SERIES TITLE TWO SPECIAL MODIFIED EVENTS ON SCHEDULE LANGHORNE, PA JUNE 25, 1999 . . . Veteran modified stock car racing talent Jeff Strunk is sitting on top of the standings in the chase for the Motor Truck Equipment Co. Kenworth/Cummins NASCAR Modified Championship Series title. The Bethel, PA racer has 5945 counters and four NASCAR Modified feature wins to his credit (two at Big Diamond and two at Grandview Speedway). More than $40,000 has been posted for the fifteen top finishers in the series point chase. The current point leader, driving the Keith Harring owned Kenworth/Cummins sponsored modified, would pick up $15,000 for claiming the title when the chase ends in early September. Series officials have announced two special events coming up in July and August. At Big Diamond Raceway on Friday, July 16th a 50-lap feature will be presented for NASCAR Modifieds carrying the Cummins/Kenworth sponsorship. Of course the event will offer an increased purse and there will be "bonuses and/or perks" for those who carry the proper decals on the cars and sponsor patches on the uniforms. And Grandview Speedway will offer the Cummins/Kenworth sponsored Forrest Rogers Memorial 50-lap championship for modifieds on August 7. The race will pay $10,000 to win for those racers who have the proper decals and patches. Without the proper series sponsorship identification on the cars and uniforms, the winner will receive just $5,000. Remarkable is the fact that Kevin Hartnett holds on to second spot in the series point chase. It is remarkable because the Perkasie, PA racer has not won a race this season. However with consistent performances Hartnett has 5495 points. In third place is Jon Kellner, another racer without a win. Again consistency has paid off for the Lansdale, PA racer as he has tallied up 5360 points. Other non-feature winners who in the chase for the lucrative championship include Glenn Strunk, younger brother to Jeff. The Bechtelsville racer has 5255 counters while fifth spot is held by Dennis Bailey of Kutztown, PA with 5190. Rounding out the top ten are Shawn Reimert (Oley) 5085, Smokey Warren (Jonestown) 4705, Mike Bailey (Kutztown) 4650, John Willman (Zionsville) 4640 and Ray Swinehart (Bechtelsville) 4540. Defending series champion Ray Swinehart suffered a leg injury in a June 11th NASCAR Modified race at Big Diamond Raceway. Swinehart is expected to be out of action for at least another five or six weeks. Big Diamond Raceway in Minersville, PA offers Friday night racing for the NASCAR Modifieds along with roadrunners and sportsman stock cars. Racing starts at 8 p.m. Grandview Speedway in Bechtelsville, PA presents NASCAR Modifieds and Late Models on Saturday nights at 7:30 p.m. Additional information may be had visiting www.bigdiamondraceway.com or www.grandviewspeedway.com.
