Scoggins Soars to SAS Win CLEVELAND, TN - RIS - Local standout Lamar Scoggins of Cleveland, TN took on the Southern All Stars Super Dirt Late Model travellers and came away with the $3,000 winner's check Saturday night at Cleveland Speedway. Scoggins spent the entire 50 laps of the race overcoming a 14th place starting spot and the only lap he lead was the final one.
Mother Nature decided to look the other way as 36 Late Models checked in to Cleveland Speedway for the SAS event. The fastest of all was Stan Massey of Mableton, GA, who was making a return to the series after taking some time away from the travelling circuit, with a 15.231 second lap around the 1/3 mile semi-banked clay oval.
Massey quickly took the lead as the green flag fell followed by Mike Head, the outside pole sitter, and Kevin Gibson. Following the first caution for fluid on the track, the lead trio began to pull away from the pack, where the battle was being waged over spots four through eight. Roger Best, Jamie Perry, Paul Tims, Jake Lowry and Rodney Dickinson were all nose to tail and fighting hard for an edge as they charged around the track.
At the halfway point the order saw Massey still in the lead with Head, Gibson, Best and Perry rounding out the top five. Following a restart, Massey and Head seemed determined to settle the score between themselves as the opened up a gap to the third place Gibson. However, way back in the pack, outside even the top ten, Scoggins decided to try the high side and began picking off cars at a rapid clip. Scoggins quickly moved into the top ten and continued to use the high side to work his way towards the front. Roger Best, proved to be the toughest to pass as every time Best would exit the corner he would slide up the track blocking the high line favored by Scoggins' car. Scoggins eventually completed the pass and he was in fifth, but the laps were winding down. The final caution of the evening came out with just four laps left and with Scoggins in fifth place on the track.
When the green flew again Scoggins quickly resumed his rim riding and got around fourth and third place runners Gibson and Perry in one lap. There were two laps left as he closed on the second running Head, and as the white flag flew he was still in third, then he flashed to the high side of Head in turns one and two, closed up on Massey as they roared down the back straight, and took that high line into three. The cars came out of four almost even, but Scoggins had more momentum and won the drag race to the finish line for his first ever Southern All Star Super Dirt late Model Win. Massey finished in second with Head third, Jamie Perry fourth and Kevin Gibson in fifth.
At the checkered flag there were 17 of the 24 starters still on the lead lap. The race was slowed by only three cautions. The next event for the SAS Super Dirt Late Models will be May 30th and 31st at Tazewell Speedway, TN for a $10,000-to-win 100 lap event.
