Johnson Wins ASA Finale, Sauter Clinches Title
(Rougemont, NC) Jimmie Johnson won the season ending American Speed Association "North Carolina SweetPotato 400, presented by Jani-King" Saturday afternoon, and Tim Sauter clinched the 1999 ACDelco Challenge Series National Championship at Orange County Sp eedway.
Johnson, driving the Pennzoil Chevrolet, drove passed 1998 ASA Champion Gary St. Amant on lap 318, and then powered his way to one second margin of victory to earn his second ACDelco Challenge Series win of the year. St. Amant held on for second, followed by Mike Miller in third, with Sauter fourth and Tristan Dupuis rounding out the top five.
Sauter, a second generation racer from Necedah, WI, was not able to secure the title until the checkered flag waved to mark the end of the 1999 season. In fact, he lost ten points during the afternoon to Miller, but was able to win the championship in jus t his third full season of competition on the ASA circuit. With his win in the 1999 season opener at Bradenton, Florida, Sauter joined his father Jim and brother Jay as ASA race winners.
Miller, who entered the North Carolina SweetPotato 400 trailing Sauter by 16 points, gained ground during the event middle stages by leading the race and earning 5 bonus points, but fell six points short in his quest for the title despite finishing one pos ition better than Sauter.
The event also saw the fifth appearance of the LS1-V8 powered Project 2000 car driven by Ted Smokstad of Minnesota. The LS1-V8 engine has been mandated for use in the ASA ACDelco Challenge for the year 2000. The car finished fifth in the event after sta rting from the tail.
The final event of the 1999 ACDelco Challenge Series is the National Awards banquet at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville, TN, on December 11. Tickets and information are available by calling ASA at 1-888-ASA-1020.
