SUSSEX, Wis. - After coming off a successful first year, where he won the 1999 Pat Schauer Memorial Rookie of the Year title, Ricky Johnson's sophomore season in the ASA ACDelco Series has been somewhat of a roller coaster ride. Heading into the Labor Day race at the Minnesota State Fair, Johnson and the No. 22 Nationwide Auction Systems/WorldBestBuy.com team are on a climb back up to the front.
"For a lot of reasons people hate it and that's why I like it," said Johnson, speaking of the track that has been a featured attraction on the ASA schedule, as well as to the fair goers, for several years. "Since they only hold a race there once a year, the track is very abrasive and loose. With the limited amount of practice we get, we'll prepare our race set-up since we don't have to worry about qualifying." The qualifying format for this year's race has been modified, with the top-20 in owner points following the race last weekend locked in and qualifying for positions 21 through 30 only.
"We finished sixth at the Minnesota State Fair last year," Johnson said. "It was one of our best finishes of the year. The Nationwide Auction Systems team was able to lead some laps around there and I hope we'll be able to lead that last lap this year."
Johnson finished seventh last weekend at The Milwaukee Mile, extending his streak of top-12 finishes to five in a row. Johnson was able to move up to eighth in the ASA Series points standings, 59 points behind seventh place.
