Rick Johnson Just Misses Top 10, Extends Lead in Rookie of the Year Battle
Jennerstown, PA - Rick Johnson moved up seven spots to collect an 11th place finish and remain the top rookie in the 1999 Pat Schauer Memorial Rookie of the Year Challenge in ASA. The #22 Nationwide Auction Systems Monte Carlo qualified 18th, but quickly moved up. Johnson was involved in a spin that caused a cut tire, but was able to collect his 17th top 15 finish this season in the 18th scheduled event on the 1999 American Speed Association (ASA) ACDelco Challenge Series schedule.
The 11th-place finish earned Johnson 136 points, giving him 2,581 points for the season. Johnson maintains top rookie honors, with an 8th place positioning in the ASA ACDelco Challenge Series National Points standings. Johnson increased his lead in the 1999 ASA Pat Schauer Memorial Rookie-of-the-Year award by 4 points and is now 115 points ahead of his nearest competitor.
“The Nationwide Auction Systems car ran great. I just had the tire go down and we ended up going one lap down. This is the longest race of the year. We were able to stay out of major trouble and finish strong. If we can keep running strong and staying on the lead lap, this Rookie of the Year award can be ours. My hat’s off to my crew and crew chief, Ron Malec. They kept me in this thing after we cut the tire,” Rick said.
Herzog Motorsports co-owner, Randy Herzog, was pleased following the race. “Rick and the Nationwide Auction Systems team are close to wrapping up Rookie of the Year honors which was our primary goal for Rick and Ron. We’re winding down to the end of the season and the last two races will be crucial.”
