MADISON, Ill. - Ricky Johnson completed his sophomore season in the ASA ACDelco Series with a fourth place finish at the Gateway International Raceway on Saturday evening. With his ninth top-10 finish of the season, Johnson and the Nationwide Auction Systems/WorldBestBuy.com team were able to move up two places in the final ASA National Point Standings to finish in seventh position.
"We finished the year off where we started," Johnson said, referring to his fourth place finishes at Gateway, as well as at the season opener in Lakeland, Fla. "I would have liked to have had finishes like this all year long with the Nationwide Auction Systems/WorldBestBuy.com Vortec-powered Chevrolet, but our momentum just seemed to pick up the last few races. I learned a lot this year racing in the ASA ACDelco Series and I'm looking forward to the future."
Johnson started the BFGoodrich Tires 200 from the 21st starting position, after taking a provisional. Johnson, disappointed with his qualifying run, would quickly move up through the field from the drop of the green flag.
On lap 64, Johnson made his first pit stop, changing four tires and adjusting the handling on the racecar. The Herzog Motorsports team quickly got Johnson out of the pits, where he would work his way up to ninth place before the next caution on lap 132. During this caution period, the team changed the right side tires and took bite out of the left rear. Johnson returned to the track in seventh position.
Johnson worked his way up to fifth place, when on lap 158 another caution flew. On the restart, a car jumped the green flag and passed Johnson on the inside lane, rubbing against him to make the pass. Johnson, upset, drove the No. 22 car to finish fifth. Following the conclusion of the race, ASA officials penalized the other car and moved Johnson to fourth place, his fourth top-5 finish of the season.
Herzog Motorsports is a successful, championship-winning race team. Based in Los Angeles, Calif.; St. Joseph, Mo.; Charlotte, N.C.; and Milwaukee, Wis., Herzog Motorsports fielded two teams in the ASA ACDelco Series in 2000.
The BFGoodrich Tires 200 concluded the 2000 ASA Season. The Annual Awards Banquet will be held Saturday, December 9 at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville, Tenn. Johnson and his Nationwide Auction Systems/WorldBestBuy.com team will collect seventh place honors.
