VERNON, NY - Professional DIRT Motorsports sanctioned wheel to wheel racing action returns this Sunday August 20 to the New Utica-Rome Speedway in Vernon. Scheduled in a regular program sponsored by FOREIGN AUTO PARTS are the DIRT 358 Modifieds, DIRT Sportsman, DIRT Pro Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Slingshots plus a Rollover Contest and an Old Timer's Reunion. Race time is set for 6pm.
Oneida's Ron Holmes is the current high point man in the headline DIRT 358 Modified division, but Baldwinsville's J.J. Michaels is just seventeen points away from Holmes. Tim Clemons, Billy Wilcox, and Dale Planck round out the top five, and they are still looking for their first feature wins of the season. Other drivers in contention for this Sunday's 30-lap feature win win include Andy Bachetti, Mitch Gibbs, Ronnie Johnson, Roger Phelps, Jason Barney, John Barker Jr., and Gus Schmidt.
West Winfield's Kevin Crave recently became the new DIRT Sportsman point leader, and he will look to win his first track championship as the season winds down. However, 1-time winner Willy Decker, 4-time winner Jamie Christian, and Paul Carey should be tough for the rest of the season.
Bridgewater's Tom Denton is the current DIRT Pro Stock point leader and he continues to dominate the division. However, Frank Twing, who has won in both appearances at the track this summer, has informed the speedway he will be returning soon to try to win another feature. Jerry Holmes is the only other driver to win a feature, but knocking on the door are Bret Belden, Jason Rood, Gerry Newman, Wayne Archer, and new driver Mike Watkins.
Fulton's Dave Mannise is no longer dominating the Pure Stock division at Utica-Rome with four feature wins. Chad Ray now has two feature wins, and Jeff Pastorella has one. Jim Thomas, Mark Effner, and Waylan Wilczek are drivers still looking for their first wins of the season.
The first ever Old Timer's Reunion will be held throughout the evening of racing on August 20. Drivers from the asphalt era of Utica-Rome, including the 1960s and 1970's, plus from the early dirt era, will be in attendance to relive memories of the past and to meet race fans. Fans of all ages along with the drivers themselves will be able to relive the storied history of the Utica-Rome Speedway.
Rollover contests have always been popular with Utica-Rome race fans. Contestants run their cars over a ramp, attempting to roll their car on its roof as many times as possible. The driver with the most points after three tries wins the contest and $200. Rollover contest rules are available on the speedway website, and will be available at the track throughout this summer.
The New Utica-Rome Speedway is a Sunday family tradition in the Mohawk Valley, and you can be a part of it this summer. The gates on Sunday August 20 will open at 4pm and racing will begin at 6pm. The speedway is located just 20 minutes west of Utica on Route 5 in Vernon, and it is easily accessible from NYS Thruway Exit 33. Free parking and overnight camping is allowed on speedway grounds.
