New Egypt, NJ (May 20) -- Rain, rain, go away! That's the sentiment of frustrated fans and racers, as New Egypt Speedway management was forced to cancel the weekend's racing activities due to persistent showers in the area.
The May 20 rainout followed on the heels of a partial washout on May 13, when thunderstorms cut short a five-division show after only the Rookie Sportsman and URC Sprint Car feature events were completed. The three features that were not run that night -- the Modified, Sportsman and Street Stock mains -- will be added to the existing race schedule on three open nights in June, weather permitting, treating fans to two features for the price of one on those three race dates. To kick off the month, the Street Stock division will do double-duty on June 3.
Headlining the Memorial Day weekend celebration at New Egypt Speedway, IMI will present the Medal of Honor 50 for the fire-breathing big-block Modifieds. Sportsman and Street Stocks will also be in action, and the Mid-State Communications Rookie Sportsman will run their series capper, an extra-distance double-points event that will crown a Rookie champion. The hotly contested Rookie finale, postponed from May 20, will see Dom Buffalino Jr., Doug Liedl, Dave Hoffman, John McClelland, Gene Stravinsky, Kyle Morrison, Keith Fleming, Mike Reutter Jr., Joe Tinnes Jr. and Eddie Smyth scrapping it out for the title. All ten drivers have a mathematical shot at the $500 championship.
New Egypt Speedway will open the gates at 3:30 p.m. for the May 27 Memorial Day weekend program, with the first race going green at 6 p.m. Adult admission is $16, children 7-12 are $5, and kids 6 and under are free. For more information, call the speedway office at 609-758-1900.
