St. Johns, PA . . . . . . . .Pocono Mountain Speedway was one the only asphalt tracks to get in the action on Saturday night, May 20th. Luckily the weather was cool because the action on the track was hot. Russ Frantz breaks Eric Beers' winning streak, Bruce Long rolls to his 6th Street Stock win of the year, Heartbreak for Late Model drivers Doug Yanders and Barry Callavini and hard charging Alan Decker stymies the Pro Stock field. Mike Southerton who came close to a Factory Stock win last week came out on top breaking Jim Ciampi's winning Streak. Newcomer Gary VanHorton finished an impressive third followed by Paul Monkoski and Mark Dispirito. The Pro Stocks went without a caution for their 20-lap feature event. Alan Decker started in the outside pole and by the first lap he had the lead and held it until the checkered flag flew. Mike Higgins, David Whitenight, Albert Kerns and Frank Greco battled hard for their position but did not have enough tonight to catch the 97 of Alan Decker. The Late Model race was shaping up into a classic battle when on two occasions the leader of the race found trouble. On the green flag lap Mike Radocha and Dwayne Mory got together causing the field to scramble. Barry Callavini led the field to the green flag restart and continued to do so for the first 18 laps. When the caution came out on lap 18, Callavini was forced to the infield with overheating problems, handing the lead over to Doug Yanders who had worked his way up to second from his 6th place starting position. Also in tow behind Yanders were Nate Correll and Barry Gommer. On the ensuing restart the top three cars came into turn one while battling for position and there was contact, sending Yanders spinning and ending any chance of him capturing his first career win. This scrambled the field again putting Correll into the lead with Don Holland behind him. The two Late Model drivers put on a show for the next three laps until Holland was involved in an incident on the backstretch. This set up a three-lap shootout in which Correll held off Dean Kline, Barry Gommer and Mike Radocha. Bruce Long of Hunlock Creek, PA now is a perfect 6 for 6 in Street Stock feature events this year. Chris Burge led the field to the start and held the lead for 4 laps until Bruce Long, coming from the last starting position passed the #29 of Burge. Burge stayed close to Long for the next 10 laps until he was battling for position with third place runner Rich Spaide Jr. and spun coming out of Turn four. This put Spaide up to 2nd and for the remainder of the race he tried to pass Long high and low without success. Donny Hartzell and Chris Burge who did a great job to get back several positions, rounded out the top four. Russ Frantz of Coplay, PA not only broke Eric Beers' winning streak but earned his fiftieth career win. The mighty modifieds took to the track with Adam Horwith on the pole position. Horwith led the first three laps until Ike Iddings went to the point. The race was slowed two laps later when Jim Hauser went up and over the 6x modified of Tim Santee on the backstretch. No drivers were hurt and the race continued for the next 7 laps with Iddings in the lead. Frantz made the move for the lead on lap 13 and he brought fellow feature winner Eric Beers with him. These two cars looked glued together as they raced the next 17 laps. Both drivers stated that as the race went on their cars got a little tight making passing that much harder. At the checkered flag it was Frantz over Beers followed by C.J. Jones, Adam Horwith, his first top five of the year, and John Markovic. Barry Baran had a great run tonight as he stayed out of trouble and brought his metallic #99 home in 6th. The action continues today as the Microsprints, Go-karts and slingshots invade Pocono Mountain for the season opener of the Summer Heat Racing Series. The action begins at 2:00. The short track racing is back next Saturday night at 6:00 P.M. for the Modifieds, Street Stocks, Late Models, Factory Stocks and Pro Stocks on Larry Ward Memorial Night.
