ST JOHNS, PA. . . Despite a few rain, the entire racing program at Pocono Mountain Speedway was completed. In the headliner, Don Wagner led all laps, taking the checkered in the modified feature. At the drop of the green, Wagner grabbing the lead from the outside pole. Matt Hirshman followed along to claim 2nd, while pole sitter Jason Beers fell back to 3rd. Three cautions on the first three laps forced a single file restart. The field went on a 21 lap green flag run with Wagner and Hirshman still 1 and 2. Tim Henry took over 3rd, followed by Mike Adams and John Markovic who worked his way up from starting mid pack. It took a couple laps to complete, but on lap 8, Markovic got around Adams to take over 4th. Meanwhile, Eric Beers, who started outside of Markovic was working his way up through the field, settling behind Adams for 6th. With many area tracks canceling early because of rain, visiting Dave Pecko made his presence felt. Starting deep in the field, he made short order of cars in front of him, moving up behind Eric Beers by 13th circuit.
Over the extended green, the main battle for position was between Henry and Markovic. Markovic tried both high and low, but just couldn't carry enough speed down the straight away to complete the pass. On lap 25, the two got together in turn 1, bringing out the yellow and sending them both to the tail of the field. This allowed Adams, Eric Beers, and Pecko to move up behind Wagner and Hirshman.
The field ran the remaining laps under green, with Wagner leading the way to the checkered. Matt Hirshman had his best run of the season, finishing 2nd. Eric Beers got around Adams for 3rd, while Adams settled for 4th. Pecko had an excellent finish for 5th.
In another dominating performance, Paul Koehler Jr grabbed the lead on lap 10, leading the rest of the way, picking up his 2nd Late Model victory in a row. Dean Kline Jr equaled his best effort of the year, finishing a distant 2nd.
Chris Hamilton got the better of a great battle with points leader, Frank Reakes, taking the checkered in the Pro Stock feature. Ron Babula inherited the lead with 4 to go, winning the Street Stock event. Mike Odwazny took the Factory Stock honors.
This year will be the first season Pocono mountain Speedway will have mid-season and fall season championship races. They will be extended lap, double point races with a championship trophy awarded to the winners at the annual track banquet. These are exciting races both for the fans as for the drivers and crews themselves. For the driver and crew it is an honor to be crowned the mid or fall season champion. It also gives at mid season the guys that are behind a little to catch up and at the fall it keeps interest by multiplying the amount of drivers eligible to win the title. (sometimes it changes the whole perspective in that division). The double points are awarded in the heats and the features on these nights. Each championship race will be split into two weeks of racing- Modifieds and Late Model on one night and Factory Stocks, Street Stocks and Pro Stocks on another. <pre> The races will be held as follows; July 14 - Mid season for; Modifieds and Late Models July 21 - Mid-season for; Factory Stocks, Street Stocks and Pro Stocks Sept 23 - Fall season for; Factory Stocks, Street Stocks and Pro Stocks Sept 30 - Fall season for; Modifieds and Late Model Extended laps for championship races
