ST JOHNS, PA. . . . Russ Frantz avoided an opening lap pileup on the front stretch, then leading the majority of laps, enroute to the victory in the Modified Mid Season Championship at Pocono Mountain Speedway.
At the drop of the green, pole sitter, Mark Washko lead the field to the lap 1 yellow. With the caution coming out for a trailing car in turn 4, the real damage occurred at the entrance to turn 1. Caught up in the incident were, points leader Eric Beers and #2, John Markovic. Both visited pit lane and were able to return to the double points event.
Another caution on lap 2, again involving multiple cars. Tim Henry was now in front, with Frantz moving up from the 9th starting position, to the runner up spot. Mike McManus, Andy Szapacs, and Shaun Carrig rounded out the early top 5.
On the restart, Frantz got the jump on the field, and took over command of the race. For the first half of the race, Frantz appeared to be on cruise control and heading for an easy win. A couple more yellows fell during the early laps, and each time Frantz pulled away from the field.
The only other major incident occurred on lap 23, when McManus spun in turn 1, putting a lot of debris on the track and causing another multi-car pileup. Both Eric Beers and Markovic battled their way back up through the field, now running 2 and 3 behind Frantz. Henry and Jason Beers were 4th and 5th.
The field went on an extend green flag run, with Eric Beers taking a peek on the inside of Frantz, but never able to make a serious attempt at the lead.
The final caution fell with 2 remaining, giving Eric Beers one more shot. Frantz lead the way to the checkered, making the long overdue trip to victory lane this season. The remainder of the top 5 ran unchanged, with Eric Beers, Markovic, Henry, and Jason Beers trailing Frantz to the line.
Double points were also on the line in the Late Model Mid Season Championship. Doug Yanders lead the first half of the race from the outside pole. Paul Koehler Jr worked his way towards the front from starting deep in the field, grabbing the lead at the halfway mark and going the distance for the win.
In the makeup Pro Stock feature, Jerry Brightaupt inherited the lead with two to go, picking up his 2nd win of the year. In the regular feature, Joe Hoffman took the lead halfway through, and pulled away from the pack for the easy win.
Points leader, Scott Meckes, crossed the line first in the Street Stock feature. Danny Casciolli was a repeat winner in the Factory Stock.
Great action will be back on the track this Saturday night for the Modifieds, Pro Stocks, Factory Stocks, Street Stock and Trucks. Don't miss a week because you will miss a lot. For more info call the Speedway at 570-788-7544 or visit www.poconomountainspeedway.com
