St. Johns, PA . . . . . . . .Dismal sky's turned into sunshine and the action was hot at Pocono Mountain Speedway on Saturday night. Feature winners were honored to win on what was the Larry Ward Memorial night at the races. Pocono Mountain Speedway also had 22 TQ's in attendance to spice up the action. The Pro Stocks winner David Whitenight led from start to finish to capture the win. Starting from the second starting position Whitenight jumped into the lead early and never looked back. Several cautions gave Frank Greco and Albert Kerns a chance to put pressure on the #17 but Whitenight held his line and pulled into the Fairway Chevrolet Victory Lane. The Late Model race had last week's heartbreak kids back in the front attempting to redeem themselves. Barry Callavini and Doug Yanders experienced the thrill of leading and the agony of mechanical difficulties last week. The race had Blaine Barry on the point for the first 13 laps when a caution flew for a flat on the Todd Cooper Machine. This gave Doug Yanders the chance to grab the lead which he held until contact with the 58 of Barry Gommer sent the top two spinning and to the rear for the restart. This put Blaine Barry to the point again with Callavini on his bumper. On the start Callavini took the lead for two laps when along came Yanders, who had come back from the rear of the field to battle with Callavini. For the next five laps these two put on a side-by-side racing clinic, neither one giving an inch. The two were side by side coming out of four for the checkered flag and in a photo finish it was Yanders winning. Elation was soon turned into deflation following a post race inspection when Yanders car was found to be the slightest of percentages below the minimum weight, giving the win to Barry Callavini. Second place went to newcomer Mike Schwab, followed by Mike Radocha and Dwayne Mory. Bruce Long of Hunlock Creek, PA now is 6 for 7 in Street Stock feature events this year. Rich Spaide, Jr. broke the streak of any driver that has won every feature event this year at Pocono Mountain Speedway. Following a caution on the green flag lap the race went green to checker. Rich Spaide Jr. took the lead after the first caution and had to hold off Bruce Long who on the final lap was making the move to keep his winning streak alive in turn two. Spaide and Long touched but Spaide held off the 97 Street Stock of Bruce Long for his first win of the year. Following Long was Chris Burge, and Greg Galena. Russ Frantz of Coplay, PA consecutive winning streak is now at 2. Chuck Schartzer led the Modifieds to the green flag and immediately began to build a commanding lead until the yellow flag flew on lap 7, when Northampton PA resident and NASCAR Modified Tour driver Greg Edelman made slight contact with the wall. This was only a temporary distraction for Schartzer who built his lead back up for the next 10 laps. With the caution waving again Schartzer looked back and saw last week's feature winner Russ Frantz moving in. On lap 23 Frantz made the move past Schartzer on the outside going down the back stretch and looked like he had easy sailing until a caution came out on lap 29 that involved, John Markovic, Magee Miller, CJ. Jones and Andy Szapacs. This set up a green white checker finish, Frantz held on for his 51st career victory followed by Chuck Schartzer, Sean Kehley, Mike Adams and Brian DeFebo. The short track racing program is back next Saturday night at 6:00 P.M. for the Modifieds, Street Stocks, Late Models, Factory Stocks and Pro Stocks. The action also continues next Sunday as the Microsprints, Go-karts and slingshots invade Pocono Mountain for the Summer Heat Racing Series. The action begins at 2:00 P.M. Pocono Mountain Speedway is conveniently located for fans and competitors from Exit 39 (Route 309 / Mountaintop) off Route 80 in the scenic Pocono area.
