ASA Race #4 (Event 3 of 20)

May 4, 1997 "Florida 300"; Five Flags Speedway; Pensacola, Florida

Finished: 27th - Running Started: 17.634 (102.076 mph)

During practice for the "Florida 300", Bob posted the 6th fastest time, but when it was time to qualify he posted the 2nd quickest time behind Mike Garvey. However after post qualifying inspection Garvey's tires failed inspection giving Senneker his 49th career pole. "I thought a time in the low 18-second range would win the pole," he said. "I never expected we'd gp that fast!" At the start of the 300 lap event, Bob led laps 2-5, then he fell to 5th by lap 22, fighting a loose race car. He would fall all the way to 8th by lap 53, when he noticed a miss in the engine. At the 1st caution on lap 60, he pitted for rear tires & gas, he came in again as the Senneker Motorsports crew tried to diagnose the engine miss, hoping it was just a plugwire; but they could not locate the problem. He was running 15th on the lead lap when the 2nd caution flew at lap 82, with the car still loose, he pitted for right sides, the miss would still come and go down the straightaway. The green would fly on lap 91, as Bob was racing in lapped traffic at lap 96; a car spun in front of his Ford, as he slowed up a car behind did not and spun him off the banking in turn 1 damaging the front suspension. While speeding down the back stretch to pit, the car wouldn't turn and he hit the wall in turn 3. The left and right front suspension componeents were damaged, 56 laps were lost while the crew repaired the car. After returning to the race, the car was a handful to drive, but Bob brought the JR Automation/Lane Automotive/Mechanix Wear Ford Thunderbird home in 27th place. "The car was loose early, then I got tagged in the rear end in that fiasco in turn 2 & that broke a bunch of the suspension in the front," Senneker said. "It turned out to be a bad day".
