Path Valley Wins to Campbell, Daywalt, and Walstrum

Spring Run, PA - Mark Campbell of Blairs Mills raced to his third win of the season in four-cylinder strictly stock cars Saturday night at the Path Valley Speedway Park while Josh Walstrum of Fannettsburg in six cylinders and Joe Daywalt of Waynesboro in V-8 won their first features ever.

Campbell joked that he's ready to retire his low budget four-cylinder #15 and go to NASCAR racing after leading by as much as half the track in the four-cylinder thriller that saw Brian Campbell on his roof exiting turn four to the outside wall for the night's only red flag on lap seven.

Second far behind Campbell was Denny Schofield and the balance of the front five were Dave Strait, Jeff Koser and Bruce Ginther Jr. Koser and Strait won the heats.

Joe Daywalt says he needs a new engine after his V-8 350 went bad in the final feet of his feature. "I could actually see the car beside me," he said of Dave Dunkle's #1, "and I put the pedal all the way down and heard a grinding start in the engine." Daywalt beat Dunkle across the line by a front fender and half a door after leading from lap 13 to the finish.

The front five finishers in V-8 strictly stock were Daywalt, Dunkle, Dave Kitzmiller, Darryl Pittman and Rob Keller. Kitzmiller and Daywalt won the heats.

On lap 16 of the six-cylinder main the #61 or Ricky Rosenberry that had led until then got spun out in turn two by a lapped car and Josh Walstrum inherited the lead and then raced just ahead of Luther Daywalt Sr. to his first win ever. He said he had never even raced karts as a youngster. Todd Price took third while Rosenberry recovered for fourth place and Bob Elbin nailed down fifth.

Walstrum also won the single six-cylinder heat race.

Carlos 'Sharky' Morgan of Elizabethtown took the lead from Jimmy Staton on lap 13 and raced to his first season win in the Cyclones. "I wish we had more cars to race against, but the track is superb for these baby late models," he said.

Senior Race Director John Winsett again warned all drivers at a meeting about driving through a spun car ahead of them, "That's why I can't race here on my own track myself," he said, "so don't you do it." He also explicitly clarified rules for claiming engines. Anyone interested in exercising the strictly stock claimer option should see him before the warm-ups start.

"We are here just to have fun, and to identify promising drivers who could move up a notch or two," Winsett said, "and we will be introducing a new low cost V-8 class of real race cars before the end of this season," he promised.

The strictly stocks and cyclones return to the Path Valley clay in two weeks, on June 4, for a full evening of heats and features. Next Saturday and all Memorial Day weekend the AMA amateur Northeast Nationals take over at Path Valley with the ST Short Track race Saturday evening, the TT Tourist Trophy race Sunday afternoon followed by a rodeo and pig roast, and the Half Mile Memorial Day Monday at Williams Grove. Grandstand admission is free for the Path Valley bike events.

The Path Valley Speedway Park is located in Spring Run PA a mile north on PA Route 641 from the intersection with PA Route 75, halfway between Port Royal and Hagerstown. It is five miles east from the Willow Hill Exit 14 of the PA Turnpike. The new phone number at the track is 717-349-7111.
