ENGLISH WINS 2 AT PIR, STAYS UNDEFEATED
by Jeff Adams
Terry English of Benton returned to action at Paducah International Raceway, and walked away with 2 feature wins and $2,000 Saturday night. English won the make-up late model feature, which was made up from 1998, and then proceeded to hold off a charging Randy Sellars to win the regular UMP Late Model feature.
English, returning to the PIR high banks after a 2-week stint of chasing big-money races, drove 2 flawless races, with Sellars the runner-up for both. John Tindal, Dave Eaves, and Eddie Pace rounded out the top 5 for the regular feature, while Johnny Prior, Joe Mike, and Eaves completed the top 5 in the make-up feature.
In the UMP modified division, the large crowd was thrilled with a stunning 3-wide, race-long battle between Jeff Cone, Kevin Cole and Randall Sweeney. The three drivers darted all over the racy PIR surface, bringing fans to their feet. None, however, could get by winner Stuart Beckham, who picked up his first win of the season. Beckham held the charging trio off all race long, and led wire-to-wire for the win. Sweeney, Cole, Lemmings and Brent Glastetter crossed the stripe as the top 5.
Jimmy Burnham made a worst-to-first turnaround, as he won the Pro Stock feature after finishing in last the week before. Gary Mull won the Street Stock feature, while points leader Marvin Newton won the classic coupe feature.
