Odessa, Mo. (June 14, 2003) -- Reed Sorenson turned the fastest lap in qualifying for tonight's Missouri 250 Presented by Jani-King at I-70 Speedway. Sorenson toured the .54-mile oval in 17.225 seconds at 112.859 mph. Wheeling the No. 29 ACDelco/Tilton/Port City Racecars Chevrolet, it marks the first career pole for the $50,000 Rookie points leader. The Peachtree City, Ga., racer posted two consecutive second-place qualifying efforts in the two most recent events at Toledo Speedway and Hawkeye Downs Speedway.
"It feels pretty good to win a pole in ASA," said 17-year-old Sorenson. I was hoping to get a pole in 2003 and we accomplished that goal. Now we need a win. The points are most important and picking up five is very big. The car was really good. We put it on bottom and turned a great lap."
1998 ASA Rookie runner-up Peter Cozzolino timed in second quickest, with an official time of 17.355 seconds at 111.949 mph. In the No. 44 A&A Manufacturing/McDonald's Chevrolet, it marks the second straight year that Cozzolino qualified in second spot at I-70 Speedway. Cozzolino led the initial 32 circuits, before finishing in 29th position.
"When the car was unloaded, we didn't have a good base setup for this track," said Peter Cozzolino. "We made a lot of changes and finally got it right on the final session. The car was on the loose side that cost me a 17.1 lap, the second time around."
Robbie Pyle of Columbus, Ohio, was third fastest with 15-time event winner Mike Garvey and Toby Porter of South Carolina rounding out the top-five qualifiers. 1995 ASA Rookie of the Year Rick Beebe of Merriam, Ks., will start 17th in the event at I-70 Speedway.
The Missouri 250 Presented by Jani-King goes green at 9 p.m. (Central). Tickets are available at a cost of $25 for general admission seats.
