LARGE FIELD EXPECTED FOR 'OKEFENOKEE SHOW DOWN'
Waycross, Ga. - This coming Friday and Satirday, March 26 and 27, a large field of the fastest late models in the south are expected to be on hand at Waycross Motor Speedway as the National Late Model Sportsman Series makes its first appearance of the season at the fast 1/2 mile oval. THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN!
If the first six events of the 1999 Southern Dirt Tour are an example, Waycross fans can expect more than 40 Late Models to be on hand this coming weekend attempting to make the starting field for 100 laps of fender banging, tire burning action. Teams will be coming from South Carolina, Alabama, Florida and of course Georgia to compete in the event and many of the top names are from the Waycross area itself.
1998 Series Champion Cecil Eunice of Blackshear and veteran Mike Carter also of Blackshear, are expected to renew their rivalry again this weekend. Whether it is getting to the track, or racing on it, these two guarantee to put on a show. Other local area drivers include Toby Justice, who is coming off an excellent run in the last NLMS race at Lake City, Fla. Jeff Jacobs in his Ford, Mike Fogel and series newcomer Kasey O'Steen.
No one who attended last fall's 'Showdown in the Swamp' will ever forget the memorable performance of Jacksonville, Fla. driver Michael Lloyd who started tail-end of the field and streaked to the front to pick up the win. Joining Lloyd, also from the Jacksonville area, will be Johnny Collins and David Browning, now second in the series 1999 point standings. Other Florida notables expected to be on hand for this event are Ocala racer and 1996 Series Champion Ivedent Lloyd, Wayne Shugart from St. Augustine, Tuck Trentham and Lawton Minchew from Deland and Everett Phillips from Lake City.
Representing their home state of Georgia will be such drivers as 1995 Series Champion, current points leader and the hottest drover on the tour, Skip Pannell of Albany, Henry Carter from Swainsboro, Billy Godowns from Louisville, a winner at Waycross in 1998, Dewayne Johnson of Columbus, who placed second in Hav-A-Tampa action at this very track, Lee Jackson, Bobby Oglesby and Mark Davis from the Savannah area, Johnny Lieupo and Randy Ellenberg from nearby Valdosta and of course the NLMS' answer to Winston Cup, our own Jeff Gordon of Albany.
Wesley Hood of Cowpens, SC will make the long tow to Waycross as this talented driver looks for his first ever win on the series and leading Rookie of the Year contender Anthony Meadows will be on hand from Lanett, Ala. as he fights to maintain his points lead.
Adding to the excitement for the 'Okefenokee Show Down' is the anticipation that surrounds many top name drivers who have been working day and night to get new cars ready for this event. Among those are Wendell Durrance of Gainesville, Jody Rogers of Statesboro, Larry Perry of Lake City, Tracy Walden of Louisville, Dennis Smith of Thomson, Mo Gordy of Bartow and Gene Ross of Lake Park. Many of these are expected to be present when qualifying begins Friday night.
There are many other NLMS stars that have indicated they are likely to be on hand for this event, including Lonnie Roberts, Terry Lumley, Steve Lashley, Richard Ferry, Merle Diem Jr., Lark Haskins, Charles Sealy, Dusty Cone, Vel Lowdenslager, and Tracy Mimbs.
The last NLMS event saw plenty of passing and lead changes throughout the race and this race is expected to be even better with plenty of top drivers and fast cars all competing on one of the fastest tracks in the South. There will be an open Practice session on Thursday evening for all classes. Gates will open Friday night at 5:00 PM with Qualifying Time Trials and Heat Races on the slate for the Late Models. Saturday night will see Consolation races and 100 laps of non-stop action in the 'Okefenokee Show Down'.
