WIRE-TO-WIRE WIN FOR WENDELL

Swainsboro, GA - Displaying the strength of his Dennis Bennett built motor, Gainesville, Florida driver Wendell Durrance jumped into the lead at the drop of the green and then kept the Bill's Timber/Bennett Brothers Motors Chevrolet out front all night to capture the victory in the 75 lap National Late Model Sportsman feature at East Georgia Speedway in Swainsboro, Georgia. The Bennett motor in the Durrance car proved to be the difference as Durrance was strong off the corners and on each restart. Second place in the Southern Dirt Tour event went to veteran Cecil Eunice in the Norman Pontiac/Ace Pole Chevrolet, and 1996 National Late Model Sportsman Series Champion Ivedent Lloyd drove from the 17th starting position to take the third finishing spot.

"I really have to give this win to Dennis (Bennett)," Durrance said afterwards. "That is an awesome motor, it was so strong we almost burned the rear tires completely off the car. "

The only car able to mount any sort of early challenge to Durrance was Steve Jones, who ran a close second in his Quality Saw/Beardon Oil Chevrolet until a water leak caused by a damaged fan blade put him in the pits on lap 32. Jones, in his first year in Late Model Sportsman racing, won his first feature the week before and the confidence gained from that win showed as he tried vainly to gain an edge on Durrance before his forced departure. After Jones headed to the pits, Eunice took up the fight, but Durrance proved too be too strong as he maintained a steady two to three car length lead for most of the race.

Lloyd's was not the only car to make a run from the back of the pack to the front of the field. Andy Stewart took his Wendy's Auto/Griffin Plumbing/BFI Chevrolet from 14th starting position and using some heady driving and a little luck made his way to the fourth finishing position. Stewart used some quick reflexes on the first lap to avoid the spinning car of Tracy Mimbs as it slid across the track in turn four, then took his time and worked both the inside and outside grooves to gain his first top five finish of the 1997 season. Yet another top five finisher who came from deep in the pack was Jimmy Lee Davis who started 18th after having to run a consolation race to make the feature and then charged through the field in his Wiggins Racing Chevrolet to grab the fifth spot in the finishing order. The always confident Jacksonville, FL driver's trip through the field was not without incident as he was banged around on a number of occasions, but was able to keep control and used his head as much as his hands and feet to work his way forward.

Early in the race Durrance , Jones and Eunice were able to break away from the field and open a six car-length lead, but the battle that was being waged behind them was fierce and thrilled the large crowd on hand. The next eighteen cars in the 26 car field were nose-to-tail and swapping positions and sheet metal with abandon. As the eventual front runners worked their way through this mass of machinery, their task was aided by a total of 13 cautions that bunched the field. Joe Kump, who needed a Promoters Option to even make the field in the 25th starting position was another car that proved that passing was indeed possible as he came all the way to the seventh spot as the checkered flag flew.

The "Pass of the Race" came about on lap 50 when Lloyd, having caught third place runner Gene Maine on the 38th lap, finally was able to get a grip off turn four and went to the outside of the Valdosta, GA driver and the two cars roared down the front stretch side by side. As the two entered turn one they touched hard side to side but both drivers were able to maintain control with Lloyd gaining the advantage as they exited turn two. Maine would eventually suffer a flat tire and fall to thirteenth position, but the 11 lap duel and the spectacular pass had the fans on their feet.

Ricky Brant, who debuted a new black and blue paint scheme on his Atlas Sand and Gravel/Competition Products Chevrolet took home sixth in the hotly contested event with Kump seventh, Skip Pannell was eighth and Tracy Walden and Everett "Barney" Phillips rounded out the top ten.

Durrance was the first driver to win two events on the 1997 National Late Model Sportsman Series, Southern Dirt Tour, and it was his third career series win. The win also served to vault him into the point lead by a mere five points, which represents one finishing position, over Brant. Maine, the leader heading into the Swainsboro event, now lies third another five points back and yet another five points in arrears is Davis, making the battle for the 1997 Championship as tight as possible with 5 of the scheduled 14 events completed. The Southern Dirt Tour will return to 441 Speedway in Dublin, Ga to complete an earlier rained out race on Saturday, June 7th.
