New Egypt, NJ (Aug. 10) -- Junior fans will be in the driver's seat -- literally -- at New Egypt Speedway on Saturday, August 19, with a program of hands-on activities that'll give kids a chance to race on the track for trophies and paint a real, full-sized stock car.
John and Shirley Leach, owners of Delran Auto Body in Burlington, NJ, are sponsoring New Egypt's second annual Kids' Big Wheel Challenge, a pedal-to-the-plastic race down the frontstretch during intermission for the 10-and-under set, with trophies awarded to the top three in three age groups, a Hard Charger award for a non-placing best effort, and frisbees and candy treats for all participants. Kids can sign up to enter starting at 4 pm the night of the event; all entrants must supply their own Big Wheel "ride."
On the other side of the fence, kids will have a unique opportunity to pick up a brush or marker and design the paint scheme of Adam Guker's Street Stock racer, which will be parked behind the grandstands all evening just for that purpose. Guker, a 20-year-old rookie driver from Toms River, NJ, recently bought the new ride, didn't like the existing colors, and decided to paint it white and let the junior set do their thing.
"It'll be the kids' car. They can do whatever they want with it and I think they'll go crazy," said Guker.
Younger fans already chose a number for the Blair's Rental-sponsored car -- 97 -- in a blind draw on July 29. Good friend Steve Mongiello of Twinz Lettering, also Toms River, will sketch in some outlines of car number and sponsor logos ("like a coloring book") in preparation for the children's paintfest. "But the kids will take it from there," Guker stated.
New Egypt's kid-friendly action gets underway when gates open at 4 pm on August 19; big-block Modifieds, Sportsman and Street Stocks gun their engines at 6:30. Adult admission is $12, children ages 7-12 are $4, and kids 6 and under are free. The speedway is located on Route 539, minutes from Six Flags Great Adventure and the NJ Turnpike.
