New Egypt, NJ (Sept. 16) -- When Kenny Brightbill blasted into first by lap 9, everyone thought he was home free at New Egypt Speedway Saturday night. Everyone, that is, but defending champ and division point leader Billy Pauch, who closed on the high-flyin' Brightbill in the final five and stole the win with a three-to-go pass. It was Pauch's 14th Modified feature win of the season.
"It's just too tough racing with these guys," said third-place finisher Steve Moss, who held his own with the big boys for most of the 30-lap event. "They're too good."
Moss took control early in the Modified main, putting on a show to remain in the lead even with a full-court Brightbill press. Brightbill finally got the edge on lap 9 and throttled away from the field, looking like a sure winner until Pauch pulled the rabbit out of his hat in the waning laps, completing a low pass in turn 1 for the win. After Brightbill and Moss, last week's winner Gary Butler and Bob Worthington made up the top five.
Ringoes, NJ's Ryan Godown aced the 20-lap Sportsman race for his sixth win on the year, in a real cruise to the checker. Godown outgunned Mike Toth, Jeff Carpenter, division points leader Ron John Koczon and Rich Scagliotta for the victory.
George Quinlan of Brick, NJ, scored his second win of the season in the 15-lap Street Stock fray. Quinlan took the lead from Steve Mongiello on lap 7 and never looked back. Al Cheney III, Bryan Reed, Billy Bauer and Bill Bauma completed the front five, with Bauer's finish moving him into the division point lead.
Winners of the OfficeMates 5 of Englewood Cliffs Lightning Lap Awards for fastest lap in a feature event were Brightbill (Mods, 15.189), Koczon (Sportsman, 16.079) and Quinlan (Street Stock, 17.337).
Metal Fab Pro Race Shop, Pennington, sponsored the winner's trophies this night and plenty of fan giveaways. The long-awaited Ms. New Egypt Speedway contest ended in a tie between Bonnie Koczon of New Egypt, NJ, and Lynda Morgan, Levittown, PA. The girls will share the title for the 2001 season.
It's desperation time this Saturday, September 23, as AMSOIL sponsors the final point race of the year, with double points on the line. Don't miss the big-block Modified, Sportsman and Street Stock hotshots driving their hearts out for $50,000 worth of championship markers in three title battles that are too close to call. Gates open at 4 pm, and racing gets underway at 6:30 pm. Adult admission is $12, children 7-12 are $4, and kids 6 and under are free. For more information, call the track at (609) 758-1900.
