New Egypt, NJ (Aug. 5) -- The long dry spell finally ended for "Mr. Excitement" Saturday night as Sinking Spring, PA's Kenny Brightbill returned to victory lane at New Egypt Speedway, scoring his first Modified feature win since July 18, 1999.
"We were struggling there for a long time," Brightbill said post-race. "But we changed grooves and stuck with it and it paid off."
Ken Wismer Jr. led the field around for the green flag with Darren McCaughey quickly moving in to challenge, taking the lead in the early going. Division points leader Billy Pauch appeared to be making ground on the outside lane when the rear axle in his car broke, taking him out of the race on lap 6. On the restart, McCaughey remained on top with Rocco Infante giving chase. The two frontrunners ran bumper to bumper in the low lane as Brightbill switched to the outside groove and began to make headway through the field. Lap after lap, Brightbill patiently advanced to the front, finally clinching the lead from McCaughey with three to go. It was Brightbill, cruising in for his 21st career win at New Egypt. McCaughey, Infante, Keith Hoffman and Mark Bitner followed Brightbill to the line.
Pitting early to change a flat tire, Ringoes, NJ's Ryan Godown rebounded with a vengeance in the 20-lap Sportsman fray to notch his fifth win of the season. Godown took control on the two-to-go signal, with Mickey Kessler, Jeff Carpenter, Jack Swain and Mike Lyons trailing him at the stripe.
Brick, NJ's George Quinlan captured his first win of the season in the 15-lap Street Stock feature. Quinlan started 12th, and took charge before halfway with 1999 division champ Pat Conaway giving chase. Quinlan held off the hard-charging Conaway with Ralph Gargiulo, Billy Bauer and Steve Mongiello completing the top five.
Winners of the OfficeMates 5 of Englewood Cliffs Lightning Lap Awards for fastest lap in a feature event were McCaughey (Mods, 16.810), Godown (Sportsman, 17.888) and Conaway (Street Stock, 18.236 ).
