New Egypt, NJ (July 8) -- Tom Carberry of Hopewell, NJ, scored his second win of the season Saturday at New Egypt Speedway, hitting a big $2,550 home run in the Modified feature event on Mid-State Communications' Grand Slam Little League Night.

"The last time I won, I learned and started lifting weights and riding my bike to get in shape," said Carberry, after becoming the only driver other than defending champ Billy Pauch to double in the Modified division this year. "This track is tough to drive when it has a lot of bite in it like this."

Carberry led all 30 laps in the Modified main event, deflecting a fierce charge by Whitehall, PA's Keith Hoffman in the late stages to score the win. It wasn't an easy victory, however, as Hoffman caught Carberry in lapped traffic on the final lap and actually surged ahead of the leader before Carberry resumed control in a crowd-thrilling sprint to the checker. Hoffman settled for second, with Mike Hendershot third, Willie Osmun fourth and Mark Bitner fifth.

New Egypt's own Ron John Koczon notched his third checker of the year in the Sportsman class. Koczon grabbed the lead from Jack Swain on a lap 12 restart, and cruised in for the popular victory. Larry Archer was a close second, followed by four-time winner Ryan Godown, J.C. Mears and Mike Lyons.

Williamstown, NJ's Pat "Cadillac" Conaway captured his second consecutive win, his third of the season, in the Street Stock 15-lapper. Conaway charged from the rear after an early race tangle to take command with five to go. Ralph Gargiulo was second, with Billy Bauer third, Rich Page fourth and Kenny Guyer in fifth.

Winners of the OfficeMates 5 of Englewood Cliffs Lightning Lap Awards for fastest lap in a feature event were Carberry (Mods, 15.525), Archer (Sportsman, 15.811) and Gargiulo (Street Stock, 18.072).

On this baseball theme night, heat race winners in all three divisions took part in Mid-State Communications' Grand Slam Challenge, with any driver able to hit a pitch out of the park winning $50. Three drivers -- Mickey Kessler, Ron John Koczon and Kenny Guyer -- slammed homers off pitcher Jack Swain and collected the Mid-State bonus bucks.

This Saturday, July 15, it's Wing Night sponsored by Opdyke Lumber and AMSOIL, with the popular URC Sprint Cars invading the speedway. Modifieds, Sportsman and Street Stocks complete the four-division race card which starts at 6:15 pm. Gates open at 4. Adult admission is $18, children 7-12 are $6, and kids 6 and under are free. For more information, call the speedway at (609) 758-1900.
