New Egypt, NJ (June 10) -- Hopewell, NJ's Tom Carberry had a fast race car all year at New Egypt Speedway, but the car couldn't hold it together for the distance. That all ended Saturday night as Carberry captured his first Modified feature win of 2000, worth a cool $2,500. Carberry becomes the sixth different Modified winner at the track this season.
"All we've got to do is finish races and we'll be there," a tired Carberry stated in victory lane. Carberry got the jump on the field from his pole starting position with Tim Tanner Jr. quickly giving chase. The top two raced through lapped traffic in the early going while last week's winner Billy Pauch snaked through the field into the top five. Pauch's hopes for a repeat were dashed when he was involved in a red flag incident on lap 21; although he rejoined the field, he could only muscle back into fourth at the finish. It was all Carberry up front to the end, with rookie sensatuion Rocco Infante stealing second from Tanner with two to go. Pauch and Scott VanGorder completed the top five.
It was double features for the Sportsman cars, with New Brunswick, NJ's Chris Wasson winning the main event postponed from May 13, and Ron John Koczon backing up last week's victory with a win in the nightcap. Wasson led the first 20-lapper from green to checker with J.C. Mears, Jack Swain, Paul Marra Sr. and Larry Archer making up the front five. In the regularly scheduled feature, New Egypt's own Koczon came from 19th to post his second straight checkered flag. Trailing Koczon at the line were Mickey Kessler, Mike Toth, rookie Dom Buffalino Jr. and Tom Eppolite.
Flemington's Billy Bauer picked up his fourth win of the young season in the 15-lap Street Stock feature. Bauer took charge just prior to the halfway flags and opened up a lead on the field en route to the win. Kenny Guyer, George Quinlan, Pat Freiberger and Ralph Gargiulo followed Bauer to the stripe.
It was Be-Bop Night at New Egypt with "Elvis" paying a special visit, hula hoop and Twist contests for the fans, and the Garden State vintage stock cars putting on an exhibition race. Winners of the OfficeMates 5 of Englewood Cliffs Lightning Lap Awards for fastest feature lap were Billy Pauch (Modified), Ron John Koczon (Sportsman) and Billy Bauer (Street Stock).
This coming Saturday, June 17, is Dad's Appreciation Night at New Egypt with a big gift for Father's Day: there'll be double features for the Modifieds at no extra charge. Sportsman and Street Stocks complete the three-division card. Gates open at 4 p.m. and the first heat takes the green at 6:30. For more information, call (609) 758-1900.
