Pauch Has The "Advantage" On Sat. At New Egypt

New Egypt, NJ (June 26) -- Coming off a big mid-week Modified win, Frenchtown, NJ's Billy Pauch fought off the persistent challenges of six-time winner and current Modified point leader Kenny Brightbill to score his sixth win of the season on Advantage Financial Night at New Egypt Speedway.

"The track was pretty racy tonight," Pauch told the crowd. "I didn't know whether to run the bottom or the top. We got a little loose on the bottom so I went to the top."

At the drop of the green, Tom Carberry was out front with the first caution waving on lap 6 for a multi-car mixup. It took two attempts to get the action underway with Carberry retaining the lead. After several laps, Gary Butler moved to the fore with Billy Pauch, who started 15th, making an inside charge on a high-running Carberry for second. Pauch charged into the lead on a lap 8 restart. Kenny Brightbill came from 18th to sweep under Butler, and set up for a classic one-on-one with Pauch. Brightbill tried every move in his arsenal to gain an edge on Pauch, as the two threaded their way through lapped traffic to the fans' delight. Brightbill had his best shot on a lap 25 restart, but Pauch ultimately held sway right to the finish line. Brightbill finished a car length behind, with Gary Butler, Bob Drayton and Eddie Bohn following the powerhouse duo across the stripe.

Jack Swain of Mt. Laurel, NJ, had 'em covered in the Sportsman event, coming from 11th for his first checkered flag of '99. Swain led a trio of hungry drivers in a fast and furious main. "I can give you 700 reasons why I'm happy to be here. This is the greatest track around and I mean it," Swain claimed from Victory Lane. Mickey Kessler, Ron John Koczon, Keith Brightbill and Rocco Infante played bridesmaids.

The 15 lap Street Stock feature went down to the wire, with Flemington, NJ's Billy Bauer picked up his third win of the year, after twice battling back from the rear. On the final turn of the final lap, Bauer's inside move on leader Pat Conaway made for a thrilling photo finish that was awarded to Bauer. "I didn't know if I was gonna get caught up in that wreck there with Ralph (Gargiulo) getting upside down." Trailing Bauer and Conaway at the checker were Jeff Carpenter, John Turnure and Mick Search.

The Mid-State Communications Modified Cash Dash was worth $300 to Kenny Brightbill. One lucky fan claimed the 50/50 prize of $1,638, and many fans took home valuable prizes, courtesy of Advantage Financial.

Next week's Big Bang 40 for Modifieds and fantastic holiday weekend fireworks display is sponsored by IMI and Art's Radiator; the Sportsman and Street Stock divisions are also on the card. Gates open at 4 pm, warmups at 6 and first heat goes green at 6:30. Adult admission is $20, children 7-12 are $7; kids 6 and under are free.
