New Egypt, NJ (Sept 12) -- On a tear of late, Frenchtown, NJ's Billy Pauch outran the challenges of invader Wade Hendrickson to score his 11th win of 1999 in the Modified feature Sunday night at New Egypt Speedway. The event was run on Sunday after wet track conditions forced cancellation of the Saturday night program.

"The crew and sponsors do a heckuva job," said Pauch, who's won five of the last six Modified races at the speedway. "In order to gain ground, you've gotta keep stringing 'em along." Pauch still trails Kenny Brightbill in the track's $10,000 Modified division point chase.

Tom Carberry took charge on the green in the 30-lap run. Pauch, who started 18th, quickly advanced to eighth by lap 5, and took advantage of Brightbill's spin and a turn 2 pileup to power into second. One more restart put Pauch on the point, and he opened up a commanding lead on the field. Invader Wade Hendrickson worked into second and took a bead on Pauch; but the high-flying Pauch lost Hendrickson in lapped traffic to cruise across the stripe for the $2,500 win. Hendrickson turned in a super run for second, as did Mark Bitner in third. Roger Laureno and Brightbill, who rebounded twice from the rear, completed the top five.

Lining up 14th on the grid, Farmingdale, NJ's Mickey Kessler drove the race of his career, fighting off the persistent challenges of Mike Toth, to post his first Sportsman feature win of the '99 campaign. "It was up to me to lose it on the last lap and I knew it," Kessler stated. Toth's best run to date placed him second at the line with Bob Worthington, George Gareis and Matt Papiez rounding out the front five. Worthington capitalized on Keith Brightbill's crash to take the division point lead, with seven top-four finishes in a row.

With five laps remaining, Brick, NJ's high-riding Ralph Gargiulo claimed his third straight win, and seventh of the year, in the Street Stock ranks. Al Cheney III, George Quinlan, Richie Byrne and Jeff Carpenter chased Gargiulo to the stripe. The win enabled Gargiulo to close on division point leader Billy Bauer, who was sidelined in a frontstretch mishap. Cheney won the Mid-State Communications Cash Dash, worth $646.

Mark Blackwell of Metal Fab presented Wild Card Bonus Bucks to one top finisher in each division. The Kids' Big Wheel Challenge, sponsored by Delran Auto Body and Leach Racing Associates, was a big hit with the children, who were given trophies, checkered flags and frisbees for their efforts.

Next week it's Wing Night at New Egypt Speedway with a return visit by the popular URC Sprint Cars. Modifieds, Sportsman and Street Stocks complete the four-division card. Gates open at 3:30 pm, warm-ups are at 4:45 and the first heat gets started at 5:30 pm. A Sunday raindate is in effect. Adult admission is $18, children 7-12 are $6, and children under 6 are free.
