Pauch Tops on Pepsi Night of Champions at New Egypt
New Egypt, NJ (June 22) -- Put the money on the line and Billy Pauch will take it every time -- and that’s just what the Frenchtown, NJ flyer did on Tuesday night, winning the 50-lap special event on Pepsi Night of Champions at New Egypt Speedway.
“I’ll tell you, our biggest problem has been the motor -- my Pop’s been working on it. We’ve changed the cam, the carburetor, trying to get it to work,” Pauch told the big crowd on hand, after pocketing $6,000 for the midweek score. “I think we’ve got it now.”
Tim Tanner Sr. and Kenny Brightbill battled for control at the drop of the green with Brightbill moving out front until a caution for a Craig VonDohren spin brought out the caution and forced a complete restart. On the green, Tanner took command with Fritz Epright working the inside of Brightbill for second on lap 2 as he set his sights on Tanner. With an inside run in the fourth corner, Epright was out in front as the caution lights blinked on for a Jeff Strunk spin. On the green, Brightbill moved ahead of the field as Billy Pauch powered into third. Pauch’s inside move in the second turn put the D.A. Hanson #1 in second. Rich Scagliotta spun, forcing a break in the action on lap 10; on the restart, Pauch used the inside lane to charge ahead of Brightbill. A Tim Tanner Jr. spin on lap 16 again slowed the action but Pauch maintained control. Doug Hoffman’s inside run in the fourth turn now put him in second. VonDohren brought out the caution lights on lap 18 when he spun in turn 4. On the ensuing restart, Hoffman rode Pauch’s bumper and the two battled side-by-side around the track, lap after lap. Hoffman grabbed control with an inside move in the fourth turn as the yellow lights blinked on for Bob Drayton slowing with a flat tire. Hoffman retained the lead on the restart; however, on lap 21, Pauch’s mastered an outside charge that dropped Hoffman to second and began to pull away. With Pauch working his way through the backmarkers, Brightbill and Hoffman squared off to claim second and, on lap 39, Brightbill’s inside move in lapped traffic landed him the runner-up spot. It was all Pauch in the end, lapping up to the seventh place car, as the checkers waved.
Brightbill, who battled motor problems all evening, related, “We broke in hot laps and were only running on 7 cylinders in the heat and feature.” Hoffman, who won a feature earlier in the season at New Egypt, admitted, “My crew worked really hard from the heat to the feature. Billy had too much for us tonight.”
Pauch was also the winner of the Mid-State Communications Cash Dash which paid $270, and one lucky fan took home $3,402.50 as the winner of the night’s 50/50.
This Saturday night it’s Advantage Financial Night, with a mountain of giveaways for the fans, as the Modifieds, Sportsman and Street Stocks battle to the wire. In addition, soap opera star Joie Lenz, of “The Guiding Light,” will sing the national anthem and meet the fans. Gates open at 4 pm, warmups are at 6 and the first heat gets the green flag at 6:30. Adult admission is $12, children 7-12 are $4, 6 and under are free.
