West Union, IA - Todd Kelley started on the outside front row and held off a hungry pack of cars for the RaceRPM.com/Sub City 25 win at Echo Valley Speedway, a NEI Dirt Tour event.
Kelley rode the cushion at the drop of the green flag into the lead, and he was able to open a small lead over Chard Lerch and Jamie Aikey. Lerch was able to eat away at that lead throughout the middle of the 25-lap A-Main and was starting to make a move for the lead when a yellow flag came out on lap 17.
When racing resumed, Aikey passed Lerch for second and started to reel in Kelley. Aikey ran out of laps as Kelley drove to the win. Aikey finished second follow by Lerch. Ron Barker and Mark Schulte rounded out the top five.
"That was fun," Kelley said in victory lane. "I wasn't thinking of heading to Allison next week, but I might have to think about it now, because that was a lot of fun." Kelley, driving the Kelley Trucking, Bushman Custom Chopping Pro Chassis number "27", also picked up the Action Sign Heat Race Bonus for winning his heat and the A-Main. Action Sign & Banner of Waterloo, IA awarded Kelley with a $50 bonus.
"If I had a couple more laps I might have got him," Aikey said of Kelley. "With only four nights on this car, we're really happy." Aikey, driving the Fuzzy's Auto, Aikey Auto Salvage, Gator Chassis number "17A", is the 2002 NEI Dirt Tour defending champion.
Lerch had a strong run in the Allen Knox Associates, Engines Unlimited, CRE Livewire Chassis number "4". "That yellow hurt us," Lerch said of the lap seventeen caution. "The tires cooled off, and it never really was as strong afterwards. It was still a great run for us tonight."
Cumulus Media Heat Race wins went to Chad Lerch, Todd Kelley, Dennis Dugan, and Jamie Aikey.
