ROOKIES SHINE DURING THE 2007 ASAMT SEASON
Friday, September 14, 2007 (Daytona Beach, FL) -- Of the 143 competitors to have earned points so far this season in the ASA Kwik Trip Midwest Tour presented by Echo Outdoor Power Equipment, 12 have registered as rookies and seven have competed in every event. Three of those rookies even visited victory lane.
"I think we have the best group of rookies in any racing series," ASAMT VP, Steve Einhaus stated. "To have this rookie field win nearly a one-third of our events says a lot about the future of the ASA Midwest Tour and it also shows that the ASAMT will be a great proving ground for all racers."
Jonathan Eilen of Hampton, MN is the leading rookie contender going into the Tour's final season event at Oktoberfest on Oktober 6-7 at La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway. He currently sits fourth in points, 138 points behind leader Nate Haseleu. Eilen made his mark right away at the Tour's Inaugural event back on April 28th by winning the Elko 125. Along with his win, Eilen has four top-five and five top-ten finishes going into the La Crosse event.
Travis Sauter of Necedah, WI currently sits second in the rookie point battle behind Eilen. Sauter, the son of NASCAR Busch Series and former ASA National Tour competitor, Tim Sauter, currently sits seventh in the season point standings. He has two top-five and five top-ten finishes so far this season. He was also the Echo "Blow the Competition Away" fast qualifier at the Back Home 100 event at Dells Raceway Park back on June 12th.
Machesney Park, IL is the home of Brian Johnson Jr., who currently sits third in the Rookie chase. Johnson, who got his start racing at his home track of Rockford Speedway and at Madison International Speedway, has had a strong start to his ASAMT career by currently sitting eighth in the season point standings. He has two top-five and four top-ten finishes in ten starts this season.
Brandon Hill, a Lake Geneva, WI resident, would probably get the biggest upset of the year award for this season as he surprised everyone back on July 20th by capturing the Echo Chain Saw/FiveStar Stock Car Bodies No Bull 100 at Madison International Speedway. Hill led all 100-laps to the win and was embraced by his fellow FiveStar employees in victory lane. Currently, he sits fourth in the rookie chase and 11th in the point standings with the one win, one top-five and four top-ten finishes.
30 points behind Hill in the point standings, sits Green Bay, WI native Doug Mahlik. Mahlik is also fifth in the Rookie standings. He has made nine feature starts and has been at all ten events this season.
Kris Kelly from Norway, MI and Kyle Calmes of Appleton, WI are the other two rookies to have competed at all ten ASAMT events this season. Kelly currently sits 15th in the point standings with one top-five and one top-ten finish. Calmes is 17th with one top-ten finish. Calmes also collected a feature win during his rookie season while competing in the Fox River Racing Club action at Wisconsin International Raceway in Kaukauna, WI.
Jacob Goede of New Germany, MN is the third rookie to pick up a feature win this season on the ASA Midwest Tour. Goede's win came on July 7th at I-94 Raceway in Sauk Centre, MN. Goede has competed in four ASAMT events where he has one win, one top-five and three top-ten finishes this season.
The other rookies who have competed this season include: Dan Lensing of Rockton, IL who has one fast time (Jefferson) and one top-ten finishes in five appearances; Michael Pickens of Auckland, New Zealand has one top-ten in four appearances; Jason Schneider of New Market, MN has one top-five and one top-ten in two appearances; and Dean Cornelius of Chaska, MN also has one top-five and one top-ten in two appearances.
