Special Mother's Day 130 kicks off Super DIRT Series at Utica-Rome.
VERNON, NY -- The 2002 edition of the Turning Stone Casino 358-Modified Super DIRT Series and the Sunoco Race Fuels Sportsman Super DIRT Series will debut this Sunday May 12 at Utica-Rome Speedway in the first major race of the year in Central New York with the Mother's Day 130. Set for race action on Nice N Easy Grocery Shoppes / F.X. Caprara Car Companies Night will be the all-stars of the 358-Modified ranks in a 100-lap extra distance special plus the Sportsman division in a 30-lap affair. Time trials will begin at 5:30pm, while racing on the fast half-mile under new management will begin at 6pm.
A stellar field of greater than sixty 358-Modifieds is anticipated for the headline 100-lap Turning Stone Casino Super DIRT Series race, which will offer a guaranteed starting spot for the Super DIRT Week 358-Modified Championship. The top names in DIRT 358-Modified racing will be at Utica-Rome for a share of the huge purse, featuring $3,000 to the race winner. Just some of the invading drivers on hand will be Danny Johnson, Alan Johnson, Pete Bicknell, Brett Hearn, Steve Paine, Pat Ward, Jason Barney, Frankie Caprara, and Vic Coffey. The race will be important to the top tour regulars as it will be the first point event to determine the Mr. DIRT Champion.
Defending track champion Todd Burley will have his hands full as he tries to score his first Super DIRT Series victory at his home track. Burley has been close to winning one of these events, his best finish being a second in the same event two years ago. Other regulars looking to score a win include teenager Matt Sheppard as well as Mitch Gibbs, Jack Johnson, Ron Holmes, Gordy Button, Ryan Baye, John Ramsey, Jim Rothwell, Aaron Excell, Ted Lamb, and J.J. Michaels, who nearly scored a major upset victory in the first Super DIRT Series event in 1999. Track points will not be issued for this all-star event.
The Sportsman division will also be featured with a special 30-lap Sunoco Race Fuels Sportsman Super DIRT Series event, offering a guaranteed starting spot for the Syracuse Mile "Firecracker" Sportsman Championship feature event plus a cool $1,000 to the race winner. The top Sportsman drivers on the DIRT Circuit including Randy Chrysler, Stewart Friesen, and David VanHorn will all be there to try to start the series off with a huge victory. Home track regulars Jamie Christian, Paul Carey, Mike Button, and defending race winner as well as track champion Tim Clemons will all try to protect their home turf from the invaders.
Treat your mother on Mother's Day May 12 to the opening of the 2002 Super DIRT Series at the historic Utica-Rome Speedway, where some of the best racing on the DIRT Motorsports circuit takes place. The gates for the Nice N Easy Grocery Shoppes / F.X. Caprara Car Companies sponsored program will open at 3pm with 358-Modified time trails at 5:30 and racing on "The Action Track of the East" beginning at 6pm.
