MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Ricky Johnson finished sixth in the ASA ACDelco Series' "Actionline 300" on Sunday at the Montgomery Motor Speedway. Johnson, after starting in ninth position, struggled with the chassis for most of the race, but brought the No. 22 Nationwide Auction Systems/WorldBestBuy.com Chevrolet Monte Carlo to its third top-ten finish of the year.
During practice on Saturday, the track began to fall apart. After practice was cut short, ASA and track officials decided to dig out the section of the track and repave the area. Eight hours later, qualifying began with Johnson securing the ninth starting spot.
The race was another battle. With temperatures nearing the 90-degree mark, Johnson stayed cool, though he was battling between a loose and tight chassis. After a few cautions, Johnson was able to pit and the crew would make adjustments to the Herzog Motorsports entry. Johnson would pick up positions in the pits and stay with the leaders to finish sixth in the fourth event on the 2000 ASA schedule.
"The Nationwide Auction Systems/WorldBestBuy.com Chevrolet Monte Carlo was a top-five car and we have a first place pit crew," said Johnson. "We picked up six positions on our first stop. With the track falling apart and the heat, it was very difficult to get a hold of. It was a tough race, but I'm very proud of the crew and our sponsors. Everybody did a great job."
"Ricky continues to have good runs and that's what is going to keep us in the hunt for the championship," co-owner Stan Herzog said following the race. "The No. 22 crew did a great job today. They pick up positions each time in and that helps Ricky on the track. We're looking forward to Nashville where Ricky had a good run last year."
For the first time this year, ASA will head to a track where they competed in 1999. The team travels to Nashville Speedway USA on May 21. TNN Sports will televise the 3 p.m. E.S.T. broadcast live.
