Fan Appreciation Night at Mission Valley Speedway
As rain drenched Western Montana for much of Saturday, the die-hard racers and race fans knew that the skies would part for some Saturday night short track action. Even with the ever present dark gray skies as usual no rain fell during the course of the race night. Fan Appreciation Night kicks off the 2004 Season, with all the drivers' donating their prize money towards spectator side improvements. All classes were on tap for the evening. Kid's rides were included in the night's schedule.
When the green flag was thrown in the Pepsi/Pizza Hut Super Stock main event #25 Kirk Hennefer was a quarter lap behind the field. He rocketed his way to the pack and started picking off cars as #55 Nathan Hampson held the early lead. #44 Alvin Brester moved his way around Hampson and Hennefer moved up to second and started pressuring Brester. In turns one and two Hennefer got into the back of Brester spinning Brester sideways in front of the field. The third place runner #46 Nathan Dumont had nowhere to go as Brester spun right in front of him. Dumont tagged the spinning Brester and suffered some damage. Brester was placed back at the head of the field and Hennefer was put to the back of the pack. Hennefer stormed though the field as the green dropped for the restart and was soon stalking Brester again. Hennefer went to the high side and the two were side by side during the last lap. It was a drag race out of turn four coming to the finish line. #44 Alvin Brester pulled off the spin and win as he nosed out Hennefer just a couple feet.
In the Bomber 4s defending champion Howard Lilly took home the main event trophy. Finishing in second was #77 Joe Pierce.
#66 Justin Drake timed in fastest in the Bombers and won the trophy dash, but he blew his motor while leading in the heat race. With Drake out #13 Ryan Troutwine picked up the heat and main event wins with #44 Pete Zeiler finishing in second..
In the Budweiser Compact heat race #3 Tony Adams and #22 Chad Brown both ended up in the turn four wall hard. In the main event defending champion #15 Dennis Schneider cruised to the victory.
The Noon's Formula Indy's had a great battle for lead in the main event. #22 Brandon Grovesner was leading when the #8 Dave Schatska snuck to the inside. The two battled wheel to wheel down the front strait with a lapped car a head. It didn't look like there would be room for the side by side leaders to both get to the inside of the lapped car, but they managed to squeeze by and coming out of turn two Schatska cleared the Grovesner. Schatska lead the rest of the way taking the main event win, as Grovesner managed to hold off defending champion #1 Don Staggs for second.
Billy Flesch Jr. spun early in the MGD/Lite Hobby main event, but that didn't stop him from coming back through the back. He took the lead away from #45 Dennis Dumont and never looked back, picking up the main event win.
#188 Hall/Hall and #142 swapped the lead around and stayed close to each other all race long in the Kruser main event. The rookies in #142 made a last lap charge almost getting in the wall, but it was not enough to get around #188 Hall/Hall who picked up the win.
Coming up this weekend is the Mission Mountain Tire Season Opener. All classes will be racing and points are on the line. Time trails at 6 PM, racing at 7 PM.
