Oswego, NY . . . "Magic Shoes" Mike McLaughlin is set to make his racing return in CNY competing in the Sunoco Race of Champions at Oswego Speedway this weekend. McLaughlin will return to his roots piloting a modified around Oswego's ultra fast oval for the 200 lap test and will also participate in a special "Meet and Greet" session.
The former Waterloo, NY resident is a fan favorite across the northeast and is certain to be a contender for the prestigious RoC victory. The competition for the Albert D. Gerber Trophy has certainly gotten much more intense with the addition of McLaughlin looking for his second win in the crown jewel of modified racing.
Seven former RoC winners have already entered this year's event and they'll square off against NASCAR Winston Cup veteran Ken Schrader and modified king pin Ted Christopher along with "Magic Shoes" Mike McLaughlin. Of course, McLaughlin is known nationally for his outstanding efforts in the NASCAR Busch Series, but his racing history on the short tracks throughout the northeast is legendary.
Mike's career began on the DIRT bullrings throughout New York State and he claimed a number of championships along the way. Then, McLaughlin got the nod to run the "Potato Wagon" supermodified for Norm Foster at Oswego. "Magic Shoes" was named Rookie of the Year at the famed Oswego oval capturing a feature win in his debut season.
Mike moved on to pavement modifieds and success followed him. At Oswego Speedway, he has three modified victories including the Budweiser Modified 200 and a 75 lap feature win in 1988 where he held off the challenges of Brian Ross and Ken Schrader in one of the most memorable battles ever seen in the division. His experience in the open wheel classes will undoubtedly have most of the field looking over their shoulders this weekend.
"Magic Shoes" will take part in the "Meet and Greet" session that has been set up with Ken Schrader on Saturday. Only a few tickets remain and they include: a catered meal on Saturday along with Friday and Saturday race tickets, autographs and door prizes.
