PENDLETON, IN - RIS - There are some occasions when timing is everything in motorsports, and for Mike Garvey of Suwanee, GA the sudden departure of one driver puts him in a prime ASA seat. Top Rookie competitor Matt Kenseth suddenly left the Milwaukee based All Star Racing Team of owner Gerry Gunderman, leaving Garvey as the chosen driver for the full-time ACDelco Challenge Series seat.
The timing is perfect for the 34-year old Garvey as ASA is set to return to his home track, Peach State Speedway this Sunday, April 20, for the WYNN'S 300 presented by the NEW SOUTH 106.1 FM. His experience is second to none of the ASA regulars, most of whom have never seen the half-mile, high banked oval. For ASA it's the first trip to Georgia since 1985.
In 1996, Garvey split driving responsibilities with Rick Beebe in the Hodges Motorsports Chevrolet, starting 10 ACDelco Challenge Series events. He finished fourth at the Milwaukee Mile, sixth at Columbus (OH), seventh at Buffalo (NY) and led 89 laps at Southern National Speedway in November 1996.
The All Star Racing Team is currently second in the national ASA ACDelco Challenge Series points standings. It has a history that includes launching the careers of Mark Martin and Ted Musgrave. Team owner Gerry Gunderman is happy to get Garvey. "He's the most experienced driver to bring in and continue our run for the championship."
Mike Garvey is excited over his new found opportunity. "I like running ASA. It's a very professional series. It has taken short track racing to another level so guys like me can make a living."
The WYNN'S 300 presented by the NEW SOUTH 106.1 FM, also features stars such as Mike Eddy, Gary St. Amant, Bob Senneker, and Marietta, GA driver Mike Miller. Miller won the ASA season opening TAR HEEL 400. The race will be telecast live to a national audience on TNN Motorsports beginning at 1 pm (EST).
